I have a few recipes for chili, spagetti sauce, muffins etc that I would like to adapt to the right proportions of protein, fat & carbohydrates.

I have a book that gives the amounts of each in foods. So I take a recipe and calculate the amounts of protein, carbs & fat.For example, I did my muffin recipe but wasn't sure if I should include the plant proteins in my calculations or should I just include the fat and carbohydrate grams?

Also, if I add wine to my spagetti sauce, and simmer it so the alcohol evaporates, does that still count as 1 block of carbohydrate for 4 oz of wine?

I'm kind of new to all this, but I have been following the Zone diet since before Christmas and the weight is coming off slowly but surely, (as long as I don't cheat). Sometimes, I am hungry a little sooner, but with no obvious reaction from too much protein or too much carbohydrate. My activity levels differ from day to day. Some days, I get more exercise than other days, so maybe that's what is happening.

Thanks
Cathy

Why doesn't the Zone include the protein content of carbohydrate-rich sources like vegetables or grains? See FAQ #13 at drsears.com. In my opinion I wouldn't count the wine as a carbohydrate, it's probably a small amount (I hope), most of the alcohol burns off, and it's divided up into portions. Congratulations on your weight loss. Slow and steady is good.

When I adapt recipes to the Zone, I generally use the block lists for my calculations, rather than grams. The reason for this is so that I don't make the mistake of counting plant proteins.

Honestly, I am not sure about the wine in the spaghetti sauce, but if the alcohol burns off, I am thinking that there is still carbohydrate to consider. Some of the alcohol may evaporate, but I think that the molecules actually break down into a carb.
