I'm just beginning to get into the zone and I have a question. Let's say I add a couple of cashews to my meal to acheive the fat block that I need. Won't I be adding more protein also since nuts have protein in them?

Thanks so much!

Yes, you are correct that there is protein in nuts. However, nuts are primarily a source of fat, and we eat them in just enough ratio that they provide adequate amount of fat without throwing off the protein ratio. By eating 3 almonds--which is one block of fat, there is only about a 1/2 gram of protein.

Nuts also have a low PDCAAS (google that one!). It is not as low as grains (~0.25) and it comes in at about 0.5 depending on the nut in question.

So they are mostly fat (usually excellent mono) and some incomplete proteins.

Don't forget that nuts are a plant food, and proteins in plant foods are not readily available for use in the body (soy foods being one exception).

I suspect this is related to Tim's mention of PDCAAS.
