Hey guys, I have just noticed a thread on crossfit and decided to check it out and it looks fantastic! Those of you who do it do you have to go to specific gyms or can you do it at home? Also, if you are doing a set of exercises and you cant do say, 20 pull ups, do you do as many as you can and move on to the next exercise or do you do "sets" until you reach 20? Finally, those of you doing crossfit, whats it like?? Happy Zoning! |

Hello,
I have been doing Crossfit for about 5 years, but on and off. Back in April I went to get certified, and now I do it all the time.
They are Crossfit gyms, just go to the Crossfit website and the right you will see the affiliates, you may find one near by. Or you can do what I do, and get some basic equipement and work out in your garage. All the information is in the website.
You don't move on until you finish the 20 pull ups, but if you can't do pull ups, you can use a box or substitude and do jumping pull ups.
When going thru my certification, almost everyone was zoning with great results and performace. So when I got home I started to read Mastering the Zone and got started. I started at 272lbs and in one month I lost 25lbs, with Crossfit and the Zone diet. As of today I'm at 229lbs and have maintain my strenght, but have improve my works out by 3 folds. Good luck! |

Hey,
The great thing about CrossFit is you can do it anywhere, even in an austere environment! The biggest thing I can stress is learn perfect proper form for all the exercise movements.
I was in and out of the weight room my whole life, and when I started doing CrossFit there were quite a few movements I was unfamiliar with. So take the time to learn what CrossFit is about- either by joining a CrossFit gym, attending a certification or you can teach yourself through the website. There is an abundance of information on the website. Check out the new Crossfit journal-tons of articles and videos to get you going.
I guess I should clarify what I meant by doing CrossFit anywhere…Most commercial gyms enforce gym edict. As oppose to a CrossFit affiliate who will advocate an intense workout with the comforts you feel in your home gym. If you start breathing too heavy, using chalk, sprinting from station to station, doing handstand push ups off their mirrored walls, and throwing weights around- your local Gold’s gym might kick you out… Lessons learned
It’s a great and proven program I recommend to everyone! Good luck and have fun!

I joined Mount Baker Crossfit in January 2006. It is by far the best all around workout a person of any age or fitness can get. When i joined i could not do 1 pullup. March 2007 I was doing 12-15 in a row plus warmup we do 10X3... Our Affiliate introduced us via a seminar to The Zone way of eating. At 57 years young I would recommend Crossfit for all ages. | I just started a Cross Fit class in El Paso Texas and in one month while zoning I have lost 5% body fat. I feel great on the diet and really enjoy eating better. I highly recommend doing both for anyone! Good Luck Zoner's! Your hard work will pay off in the end. |

Andrew, the Crossfit main mantra is "intensity". However everyone does the same exercises, but scaled to your ability whilst maintaining a high intensity. So to answer your specific questions:

I'd say that 90% of Crossfitters don't go to a specific gym, but as Crossfit is spreading around the world, I suspect that number is falling. However Crossfit is designed to be done with little equipment and everything can be substituted.

Everyone does the same exercise, scaled to your needs. Few people who start can do 20 pull ups, and until you learn kipping pull ups, only the best could do 20 dead hang pull ups. If you can do a 3-5 at a time, I would say try to do the 20 in sets as required. If not, I would suggest you start with jumping pull ups and rattle them off quickly, try to hang for a second at the top and "work the negative" as they say.

Crossfit is many many things: it's effective like nothing else out there; it's fun; it's varied and stimulating; it's quick (typically 10 - 20 mins per day); and it will get you into the best shape of your life in just a few months.
But it's also hard, or more specifically the intensity can be a shock to many people (me included). If at the end of your workout, you are not lying on the floor making a sweat angle, you didn't try hard enough! It's the intensity that's the key and that's not everyone's cup of tea. It never gets any easier either, as you get Stronger, Fitter and Faster, it becomes harder to compensate.
My only regret is I didn't find Crossfit 10 years ago. |

| Hey all, I know that Crossfit recommends the Zone for nutrition, but does the Zone recommend Crossfit? Seems like some of what the Zone says about fitness does not agree with Crossfit. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
