Hello everyone new guy here. I need to lose some fat and get more endurance. I have a circuit type workout in the early stages, and I'm learning about the zone as we speak. One thing I wonder about is how to balance that and manual labor. Case in point: I have ab out 3 cords of wood to split. Now I use an axe and a 5 lb maul to split it, no machines here. I do it on my days off (3 days a week) for about 5 hours. I was trying to work a workout into it, but I think while on the zone and working out and cutting firewood, I just don't have enough energy. I think if I added a bunch of calories, even clean ones, I'm just doing too much. I wonder if I should just forgo the gym workout and concentrate on wood splitting and the zone?

I guess the simpler way to ask my question is how do you arrange your schedule to fit in "life" like that? I am getting a good workout splitting wood, it wears me out. Is that just considered my workout or do I in fact need to add more calories to my zone?

Thank you in advance!

Hi ryker,

Try to let go of thinking about calories. Then Zone is about supplying your body with the protein it needs to support your current muscle mass at your current activity level, and then adding carb and fat to that to keep it in a balance to maintain your insulin in the Zone. I know, that's a mouthful, but that's what it boils down to. Whether you confine your exercise to your wood splitting chore, or also add a formal plan, you'd want to consider it all when determining your activity level for figuring out your protein and block requirements (refer to the calculator link at right).
