I am a newbie to The Zone. I've been training for a half marathon for several months now and thought the weight would just drop off me! But, it didn't, so I'm on the Zone. I am worried that with the increase in mileage per week (at 30 miles this week) that there isn't enough complex carbohydrates in the plan to keep me going. Are there other distance runners out there? Have you found you need to supplement with any additional complex carbs?

Just some additional info, I'm only on it for two days and feel very tired! And, I had a terrible run this morning. Any advice?

Hi Simongirl,

My husband ran his first marathon in the Zone last October. My two daughters are marathon runners also There are anumber of other very successful runners on this site who run in the Zone, too. If you do a search of these forums you'll find helpful info about runners in the Zone. In the Zone you're burning fat for all your energy needs so additional carbs aren't necessary. They would only to prevent you from being in the Zone.

At two days into the diet, you are still in an adjustment period. Give it a little more time.

Thanks, Sue. Can I ask another question? If you have a runner with fairly low body fat, where do they get there sources of energy? (not that I fit into that category, by any means!)

Hi Lara--

I am a personal trainer and marathon runner and follow a zone diet. I think the key to adequately fueling your runs is making sure that you are getting the right kinds of carbohydrates. On the days that I run, my pre-run carbs are usually from oatmeal instead of my usual fruits and veggies. For some reason, I feel like this helps me get through my runs stronger. Also, make sure that you are taking in calories during you run! Especially when you are running for more than an hour. Unfortunately it is pretty hard to stick to a 30-30-40 ratio while you are running, but if you look at some of the different products out there, such as accelerade, you will see that the manufacturers are starting to add protein.

As far as the low body fat goes, elite marathoners are pretty much the only ones who are that lean. They mainly have to continually add fuel to their bodies to keep glycogen levels from bonking. Us normal people actually benefit from have a litte body fat, as far as the marathon goes. It gives us a little back up! I am fairly lean for a female (about 11-13%) body fat, and a look like a hog next to some of these elite runners you see!

I think that a lot of people expect weight to "drop off" like you said, but sometimes running alone is not enough. Diet and weight training are essential to changing your body composition. I can't tell you how many times I hear people say, " I just ran 10 miles! I can eat whatever I want!!" Simply not true(unfortunately!).

Anyway..I hope this helps! Stick with your running and your zone diet. It will pay off! Good luck in your race!

Hi Lara,

Anyone in the Zone, whether they have a high or low body fat%, will be using fat as their energy source. To gain a better understanding, I'd highly recommend reading "The Zone" (especially the chapters about exercising in the Zone and elite athletes) and "Mastering the Zone", (specifically note the info on page 29). Other good sources are the articles on this site about elite athletes (Olympians, the Slipstream cycle team, triathletes, swimmers, etc). Also search these forums. There are marathon runners here who've had very good results, including improvements in times after switching to running in the Zone. Try the name "Martha" in your searches. She's one of the very successful marathon runners in these forums.

There's no need to consume a lot of calories during runs, not even during long runs and marathons. You already have all the calories you need stored in your body in the form of stored fat (it's explained very well in the Zone books I mentioned). People in the Zone make more energy from fewer calories because one calorie of fat makes more ATP (the energy source for muscle contraction) than one calorie of carbohydrate makes. The marathon runners I've worked with who are in the Zone hydrate only with water during the race and don't consume sport drinks, or goos, or oranges or the other foods and products handed out along the way. The thing to do to feel best and perform best is to stay in the Zone throughout the race so you keep tapping into your stored body fat for energy. You acheive this by staying in the Zone during your months of training, eating a breakfast the day of the event that you know from experience keeps you solidly in the Zone, and staying in the Zone throughout the race. Several of the runners I've helped do well eating a breakfast on race day that consists of an egg white omelet, cooked steel cut oats, and a Zone favorable fat. I vaguely remember one person using pieces of Zone bars during their runs, but I don't recall the specific details.

Some of the Zone concepts may seem to contradict the things you're familar with in regard to fueling your body for running, but they work exceptionally well. Keep at it and you'll soon begin seeing the benefits.

In regard to the weight coming off. Once you stay in the Zone, you will become leaner with little effort (and you would even if you were not a marathon runner). In the Zone you eat to support your LBM at your current activity level while constantly burning fat for energy. Use either the Body Fat Calculator on this site, or the tables in Zone books, to determine your daily protein/block requirement. Don't be afraid to eat the full number of blocks for your personal needs. You will still lose the excess stored fat and keep it off for good. 11 blocks daily is the amount for the average woman. The average woman does not run marathons as you do, so your daily protein requirement/block amount will be higher. I happen to eat 13 to 14 blocks daily.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer).
