Hello i an taking eico rx 4 capsules maybe 5 per day. I am training 6 times per week and the last 2 weeks i feel down and fatigue. I am thinking to add some oatmeal in my diet . You know the amount i should use ? How many blocks of oatmeal per week ? Thank you a lot for your help

Hi there,

It is very important at what time of the day you train. I find with myself the best time is one hour after i have woken up, and forty five minutes after i've had my breakfast.
Oatmeal is a very good source of slow releasing energy, so that should make you feel better. i would recommend 45g of dry oadmeal with about 200ml of skimmed mik, or as an alternative you could try soya milk, or even water. For me it works best with light soya milk.

The advice in the previous post wouldn't apply to someone in the Zone. The oatmeal and milk amounts recommended in the previous post are not in zone balance, and result in a very high carb meal, with not nearly enough P, and little to no fat. Using soy milk instead of skim milk would still not bring it into a Zone balance. In the Zone one is burning fat to create ATP (energy), so a high carb meal would not result in sustained increased energy. Just the opposite, a high carb meal with little P and F would take one out of the Zone resulting in a drop in energy and performance.

Alexander, I'm not familiar enough with the details of your training and your previous experience with FO supplementation to make a suggestion. Perhaps you could give additional details.

hi Sue ,

i train six days for about an hour per day 4 times karate 2 times weight training (power) . I take 4 capsules eico rx
and i don't know how much oatmeal and how often i should use.

Hi, Happy New Year to you , too! The amount of GLA required varies among individuals. Use the Eicosanoid Status Report found in on the Resources page of DrSears.com to determine your needs. some people can eat a bowl of steel cut oats daily. Prior to adding GLA to his fish oil, Barry recommended a couple bowls of steel cut oats a week on average.

I have a cup of rolled oats everyday, with a cup of milk and cup of water- is that too high in carbs for one meal?

Depends on the number of blocks you are eating in a meal. There are 4 blocks of carb in the meal you described, and that should be fine if your meal is designed to be a 4-block meal. Just don't forget to add your protein and fat. There is also a block of protein in your milk, and so you would only need to add 3 more blocks of protein and 4 blocks of fat (depending on the type of milk you are using).

yeah, thats a whole meal for me, sometimes i add some cottage cheese or turkey, but the oats actually have a fair amount of protein in them on the side, and then i have two teaspoons of pumpkin seeds- its my fav meal, i have it pretty much everyday

Alex, you may be robbing yourself of some protein, if you are counting the protein in the oats. Because that protein comes from a plant source, you may not be absorbing all of the protein (the higher amount of fiber causes some of the protein to be lost).

You will need 4 blocks of protein to go along with 4 blocks of oatmeal. 1/2 cup of cottage cheese is only 2 blocks, but you can either increase the cottage cheese, or add some other protein.

alex, if you have't read a Zone book yet, you really ought to. Most all the questions you've asked would be answered. Except for the gum one! :-)


In his books, Dr. Sears actually proposes eating a very high carb meal once a month (like the donuts you posted). You get to eat whatever you want, and then you get to see how different (as in crummy) you feel later!

Nope, don't count the protein in the oatmeal.

Have you looked at the Zone Food Block guide? If you take a look at it, you will see that oats are classified as a carb. Use the block list, I have a copy of it on my refrigerator, and I look at it all the time (even after years of Zoning).

You have to watch protein and carb content in things like soybeans and tofu. Also, the following list are things that you can count as 1P and 1C as they are a mixed protein/carb:
1 cup Milk, low-fat (1%)
8 oz. Soy milk
10 grams Soy Flour
½ cup Yogurt, plain
1 ½ oz. Tempeh

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight.
