Hey there, can anyone recommend a good cardio workout that someone can do with a bummed knee? I have a problem with my left knee (doctors are still trying to figure out what it is) and it prevents me from running and using the elliptical machine. I can do the stationary bike but I don't find it give me a full body workout.

Also, can anyone recommend a good quad workout? I can't do leg extensions as they hurt my knee a lot!! :(

Any recommendations would be great!

I've found that after two knee surgeries the only exercises I can participate in on a regular basis that are pain and inflamation free, happen to be aqua aerobics three times per week and cycling on a stationary recumbent bike. I was also swimming for a while but it was ruining my hair!

spinning! There is nothing like it and there is absolutely no pounding. I have been spinning for about 3 months now and I am totally addicted. After one hour of a spin class I am dripping wet. At some point in the beginning of the class and also somewhere in the middle i
find myself wondering why am I here...I want to run out that door. It's pretty difficult. However at the end of the class I know 100% why I am there. It's awesome. Try it out. I've done it all....I love this the best. I am turning 50 and I know what it's like when you are unable to do your favorite cardio.

Please tell us what "spinning"is. I am imagining a kid's "Sit and Spin" toy which doesn't look like anything very aerobic to me and not adult sized either:)

A good workout that I always enjoy that may not seem like a cardio workout is Hot Yoga. Look for a Bikram Yoga studio in your area.

Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle. As you pedal, motivating music plays and the instructor guides you through a medley of workouts,varying your pace -- sometimes pedaling as fast as you can, other times cranking up the tension and pedaling slowly from a standing position. This helps you to focus inwardly and work on your mind as well as your body.

for gym music and workout music, I recommend european dance music.......

it's ALWAYS the best motivational tool for me...

.....and you don't have to tell anyone at the office if u just listen to it on the mp3 player at the gym ;) ....

Try riding the bike at a good pace for a few minutes. Then get off the bike and do a circuit of bodyweight exercises or weighted or a combo both. Back on the bike and repeat the circuit . Play around with the amount of time, reps, the exercises etc

I'd recommend *trying* a rowing machine, but with a caveat: "safe" cardio will depend upon what's wrong.

A while ago I had an incident that broke off bit of the end of my femur and ripped up the cartilage on the inside of the joint. When I walked (especially up steps) my knee "caved in" because I'd have to apply all my weight to that knee, but when standing things could just stay on top of each other. I found that under those circumstances I could do bikes and rowing machines; rowing machines because even though there's a lot more muscle involved my leg went straight and there was no real "weight" on it.

Hopefully that made sense.

Of course that's just me. I'd suggest trying it and see how you feel.

Just found out from doctor that my knee injury is a cartilage tear and need operation.
Until a physio sees me I will concentrate on upper body workout.
Your reply has given me incentive to get back on my feet (after operation) and exercise in moderation.

sandra, sorry to hear about the need for an operation. having said that, you are very fortunate to live in modern times as that kin dof surgery is very advanced nowadays. i have always subscribed to the philosophy - do what you can do.

you are doing well by following it, too. i can't do everything i want, either, but what i can do, i do with some serious tenacity.

Hi Jeffrey...This could be a wake up call for me to lose weight.

I had 2 jobs before accident and was fairly active as both jobs were manual.
I need to get some weights for upper body work out as when I was cleaning I was getting a good workout.

The Zone is helping me to see things differently and is answering alot of questions.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight.
