We're going camping with a group of friends this weekend and usually this means we hang around our campers drinking (beer, wine, margaritas, whatever etc.) and snacking on chips, dips, and other junk foods. We camp at an event center grounds for a two-day event there, so distractions such as hiking trails, fishing and whatnot really don't come into play, plus, I don't want to alienate myself from the group.

Can anyone suggest a way for me to avoid falling into this all-too-familiar calorie trap? For instance, what is a good snack to replace chips and dip? What can I do to help me avoid all that bad food and overeating? I know I"ll have struggles with not drinking too much alcohol (4 oz of wine doesn't go very far). We're not a bunch of drunks, but this is kinda a fun thing we do every so often as a group and a few drinks always seems to contribute to the joviality.

Thanks for any support or suggestions.

Hi!

I'm often in that situation, and I simply drink carbonated water, or carbonated flavored water (no sweeneters, neither real nor artificial). My friends are fine with it. Granted, I've been doing it for years now, but I once began where you are now.

Some food for thought. If those are really friends, choosing to drink water will not alienate you. I had and still have very little support in regard to my diet and lifestyle from friends and extended family. I let it be their problem and not mine! :)

Hi Terri, Pack lots of pre cut vegetable sticks. Celery, carrot, zuchini, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, red and green peppers. Make a zone dip of low fat yogurt, garlic, salt and pepper and anything else that comes to mind, and eat and dip away! You can stretch two glasses of wine over an hour and a half and call it two carb. Unfavorable as it is, in a pinch it works and won't set you back too far. Another drink you might consider is gin and tonic using diet tonic, lots of squeezed lemon, and very little gin. you will feel like part of the crowd. Have fun!

Hi Sue, you beat me to it, and have MUCH better suggestion on the water.

Terri, If you put a wedge of lime in it you might even fool yourself - and certainly will feel better for it. There is wonderful pomegranite juice on the market now, and a splash of it in your carbonated water will make a pretty drink, and won't throw you off to much either. Have fun!

Cheese and half glass of wine works. Fruit also.

I may be too late for you... but here is what I did. I like wine glasses, and I have plastic ones that I take camping. I put seltzer with lime in it. For snacks, bring boiled eggs and hummus. Make up a tray of develled eggs in advance. Or make them on the spot. The other snack options that others mentioned are good too.

One thing I did though, was not be sitting there if there was any other activity available. When the kids were swimming, I went too. We went on walks...

Good luck!

We go camping quite often in the summer. All good suggestions. I never feel "left out" if I choose not to drink alcohol. In fact, I generally drink selzer water with my bowling team, even when everyone else is drinking alcohol. I don't like the way I feel after consuming alcohol.

I usually bring string cheese, nuts, a variety of fruits, etc.

Hi guys and gals, I am also new and I am going over my quick start guide and food lists. My question is how does the "others" and alcohol fit into blocks. I tend to use honey or agave to sweeten my smoothies. How do I count the others into blocks? I assume you really want most of your carbs from fruit and vegetables. What % should or could grains count in your blocks vs, fruit, vs. vegetable. I want to make sure I am balanced.
