I had an interesting experience...I was traveling to a business meeting on Thurs and knew I wouldn't be able to get much good food. Before I left, I made my version of Sue's shake with cherries chocolate etc. I added one Tablespoon of olive oil thinking it would hold me for a few hours. We left at 12:30 noon and it took until 8:30 pm to get to our hotel. I still was not hungry..in fact the concierge gave us 2 warm chocolate chip cookies, and I took it but was not interested..gave it away in fact. I should have eaten, but instead went to bed. Woke up sharp in the am. I know it was not zone-friendly to not eat for so long, but my point is that the shake with extra fat killed mt appetite. Has anyone else had any such experience? CoCo

Me...lol! That's great Coco!

That's precisely the reason I decided on 1T fat in that recipe.

BTW, since protein powder is fat free, and the meal is short by one C block, that shake/smoothie contains only 3 extra 1.5 gram fat blocks and it has essentially the same number of calories as a 3P, 3C , 3F meal. Though calories are not focused on when designing Zone meals, I mentioned them to demonstrate that even with the additional 3 monounsaturated F blocks, it's still a calorie restricted meal, just like all Zone meals are.

That's great Coco. I love Sue's Brownie Batter Smoothie too! What I always do is make one recipe and eat it right away for a meal, then I make a second recipe while I have all the ingredients out and freeze it in thirds then I get to have nice 1 block frozen treats for snacks for a few days (let it partially thaw at room temperature before trying to eat it) YUM!

CoCo, you mentioned that this was YOUR version of Sue's smoothie. Can you share what it was that you did with it?

A smoothie with a "lot of miles" is going to be helpful to a lot of people!

Hi Sue: Please tell me about this super shake.

We are still Zoning. I was looking at the pasta and cereal on the website. I have stayed away from grains since last May - do you think the pasta and cereal is a good idea for me to add - remembering that I am hypo thyroid.

Why are the Apple Cinnamon bar so much cheaper than the others?

Thanks,
Ruth

Ruth, you can find my smoothie recipe on the first page of my recipe and meal thread in the cooking Tips forum here. The apple cinnamon bars are currently on "special" right now. Other Zone products have been on "special" at other times. Whether Zone Pasta and Zone Cereal will be good additions for you will depend on your response to them in regard to insulin control (judge by hunger). They wouldn't be an issue re hypothyroidism.

Hi Sue:

I tried the Brownie Shake this a.m. I did use 2 tsp. of fish oil and 1 tsp. Dr. Sear's olive oil. Great shake. I used TJ's organic cocoa powder, I assume that is ok. I put the 2T of SHP in instead of the almond extract and figure that I can use any berry in the shake. I love the idea of the tumeric. We used it on vegetables, but I put a whole tsp. in the shake. I know how good tumeric is for you. Great idea. Thanks for sharing this with everyone.

The apple cinnamon bars have been on sale since May - I have been ordering them since then. I couldn't justify paying so much more for the other bars when these are such a fantastic value. However, I really want to try the chocolate bars at some point.

Before the Zone diet I was eating Kashi Go Lean cereal. It was a super cereal, but I stopped eating grains since the Zone. I look forward to a bowl of cereal as I love it.

Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome Ruth, glad you tried tweaking it to suit your tastes! Youre right about turmeric being good for you. I included it in the shake for it's anti-inflammatory benefits and the cinnamonfor it's ability help stabilize blood sugar levles (refer to the info in THE ANTI-INFLAMMATION ZONE for more anti-inflammatory condiments).

The top two favorite Dr. Sears Zone bar flavors at our house are Sweet And Salty Nut Crunch and Cocoa Crisp, but we buy them all (love variety!)

Good that you dropped Kashi Go Lean. Too much unfav. carb enough protein in it. Wait unitil you see the differences in the two when you compare labels.

Have a great weekend!

Ruth, I know that Sue would probably not agree with me on this, but as for cereals, I don't really think that the Zone cereal is of much more benefit than the Kashi Go Lean cereal. Lets face it, a grain is a grain is a grain.

Here are the ingredients for the Zone Cereal:
Soy Grits, Wheat Gluten, Soy Protein Concentrate, Canola Oil, Rolled Oats, Sliced Almonds, Corn Bran, White Rice Flour, Honey, Evaporated Cane Juice Crystals, Maltodextrin (Complex Carbohydrate), Soy Protein Isolate, Natural Flavors, Corn Starch, Soybean Oil, Coconut, Salt, Whey (Milk), Caramel Color, Molasses, Vitamin E (Mixed Tocopherols) As Natural Antioxidants.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't really see much listed for FAVORABLE carbs on this label.

Just putting the facts out there so that you can make an informed decision. The mere fact that ZONE is printed on the label doesn't magically turn an unfavorable product into a favorable one.

But, the real truth is in how it works for you. All of the chat about favorable/unfavorable is really only theoretical, and it is much more important to judge a product by how well it keeps you in the Zone.

Hi Ruth!

Just wanted to share with you some personal experience about the Zone bars. The Cocoa Crisp and the Iced Oatmeal Raisin tasted great but did not keep me in the "zone". I was hungry and shakey within 90 minutes. The apple cinnamon and sweet and salty nut crunch do keep me in the zone for 3 hours. I ordered the sample pack that had all 4. I would recommend you try them that way so you don't waste your money on ones that won't work for you.

Good info! I have given up on Zone bars, but back in the day when I was using them, they were not helping me, either. I think I also tried the cocoa crisp and Oatmeal raisin, but found the same to be true.

I have long used the peanut butter (old standard) and they seem to be a bit better, but I basically turned away from processed foods and began to take the approach of using more whole foods in my diet. So, I no longer use bars at all.

I will only eat the bars at work. I don't have time to eat actual food for my snack between clients so I have to have a bar with me that I can snack on quickly. I do bring real food with just incase I do get a break.

Hi Sarah and Cranberrycat!

Thanks for your opinion regarding the bars and cereal. I agree that nothing beats whole foods. I was a complete vegetarian for 14 years and pride myself on whole, fresh foods. I rarely use anything frozen etc. When my husband and I started the Zone last May, we decided to add fish and some chicken or turkey to our diet. It was hard to give up sweet potatoes, squash and things of that nature,as I know they are loaded with vitamins and minerals, but we have done it.

I cringe when I read recipes with the turkey sausage and Boca Burgers and other processed foods because of the salt content. Most turkey sausages are around 13g. of protein with 450g of sodium! Talk about water retention! We are supposed to consume less than 300g of sodium in the whole day - if we are healthy and less if you have heart trouble.

I have tried the Apple Cinnamon bars for travel along with the shakes and did order the cereal to try. It doesn't seem right that they are all so sweet when nothing else that we make on the Zone is so sweet. Something doesn't add up. I will however continue to use the bars etc. for travel because they are so convenient.

I couldn't get over how sweet the cereal is compared to the Kashi Go Lean Cereal. It tastes incredible, but is it really ok to eat when the Zone talks about not eating grains? I think I will use 1/4 cup for a snack when I am really craving a grain.

I am also a huge veggie person and am surprised at how many meals do not have greens included. (broccoli, salad, brussel sprouts, spinach) I am not the norm because I can actually OD on veggies and have been this way since I was very young, but if people could just understand how healthy veggies are for us. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals along with fiber. They fill you up so much that you are just not hungry between meals. It is ashame that so many Americans will not take the time to eat "real" food.

I am was saddened to see Dr. Sears' new line of products. He is giving into Americans who are eating so poorly. White breads etc. I realize they are Zone safe, but how many Americans can afford his products in this economy? Why doesn't he stick to educating people on how to eat healthy and getting them programmed to eat whole food instead of processed foods?

I do like the idea of the Zone and want to continue with it, but we all see things in life differently. I appreciate reading everyone's opinions and I am impressed with the people who have weight problems and health issues and have stuck with this program to become healthy and more active. Keep it up!

Cran is correct that I don't agree with that statement. If anyone here is interested in checking out the differences in the two products mentioned, it would be of more value to look at all the facts for both products, including the Kashi ingredients too, and the nutritional labels for products. It will quickly become apparent which is the better choice in regard to insulin control and appetite suppression and why (a hint: note that gov't. ingredient list standards for packaging dictate that ingredients be listed in order, from the most to the least). As they say, knowledge is power. A less informed consumer might mistake them for being the same thing, but they are not. My tip to those of you in doubt about what products to choose to use to enhance you Zone diet, rather than going on hype and hearsay, it's better to get the facts and make your decisions based on actual info and product testing results.

Hi Ruth,

I totally agree with you on the veggie thing. When I do not incorporate enough veggies into my meals, they do not satisfy me as long.

I am also saddened by Dr. Sears' new line of products. I feel it goes against everything we were taught from the beginning. Especially when some of his new products have hydrogenated oil and other artificial ingredients. Hugely disappointing! I will continue doing the zone with "real" food. Not like I could afford 5 rolls for $12.50 + shipping anyways.

Sue,

Glad you chimed in.

I don't think I was suggesting that the cereals were the same. If anyone got that impression, that wasn't what I was saying. And, if you think it is important to make the distinction, maybe you can post a comparison of the labels.

But, that really wasn't my point. The point is that both cereals use grain, both use sweeteners. The Zone Cereal does not have very much in terms of FAVORABLE carb (and you have already made it clear that Kashi isn't favorable, either, based on your prior post). I merely felt that it was important to say that the Zone Cereal does not magically turn unfavorable carbs into favorable ones, just because ZONE is printed on the label.

Hey Cran, I knew what you meant, even if Sue didn't. And I agree. While Zone cereal is better, I don't think it is much better as far as a good food source, - far from a whole food and raw foods. Certainly highly processed. And though it might have good Insulin control, still unfav carb as grains, processed, etc.

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
