Hi everybody. Here in Italy is 12 pm and I have to confess last night I didn'eat in the zone. I am doing it because I think it will be more than a tip if only I were able to write how awful I feel today.
Well, it all started with a family pizza I made myself, Zone friendly for me and my mum who is a zoner too(very proud of her). But than, after dinner, an horrible monster that was inside me pushed me to have some Nutella and something else I am ashamed to write down. I said to myself: "well, after nearly 5 months in the Zone I can try how I will feel, ad if it is true I feel so bad I'll stuck to the Zone even better than now" Well, It is true!!!
I slept bad, this morning I feel my eyes and legs are swallen, i don't feel like going running and I have headache. So my tip is: stuck to the Zone.
The reasons why I did it are clear in my mind. Another reasons is, in my case, that I hadn't taken the omega 3 in the whole day. Now I know that without it I feel hungry and more likely to craving. Well, now I am going to have my perfect 3 blocks meal.
Have a nice Sunday

enza, thanks for sharing that with us. If you’re like me, when you've been through that experience enough times, you won't even want to eat those things anymore. Yesterday we had friends over of a BBQ. I served Zoned food and also some not-zoned food (you can see my menu for yesterday's party in the Accountability thread). I had no problem staying in the Zone last night (saying no to some of the foods) and I feel great. Today I'm eating out (restaurant, somewhere in NYC) and I have no doubt that I'll easily be able to stay in the Zone. Don't look back and take it a meal at a time. Feel better soon!

Thanks for sharing that! I've been only doing the zone for 2 1/2 weeks and sometimes I wonder what would happen if I did eat outside the zone. I am feeling so much better now that I really don't want to chance it. Hearing your story helps!

Yes, thank you for sharing that story! I've been a "zoner" on and off for 8 years, and I still will go off the diet regardless of how it made me feel the next day...I don't know why I just haven't learned my lesson, but sometimes I just want to eat what everybody else is eating! I know how absolutely horrible and depressed I feel the day after, but still it won't stop me...Sue, I wish I was as strong as you!

Great post Enza! I had a similar experience a few months into the Zone and that just cemented me into the Zone. I hated the way I felt for the next few days and I've never eaten 2 back to back meals with unfavourable carbs since...and NEVER have eaten a completely OOZ meal since either. Its just not worth the recovery....I equate it to a hangover...self-inflicted and is it really worth the pain afterwards?
Happy Zoning to All!

Sue,Sharyn, Sarah, Jana...THANKS.
It really helps to have someone up there who understands and listens.
Today I feel better but non completely well, yet. You know what, I sometimes do not remember how it was before, when I was always trying to find a proper way to eat as I have always been fond on diets. Saturday night experience helped me to remember...
And you got the point, It's not worth the recovering.

I hear all of you. Yeah, the backlash from eating outside of the Zone is pretty horrible. I feel it very quickly (I'm diabetic.) It's enough to make a person hate food after a while... Ha! I didn't put on weight hating food, just isn't the case. ...but I considered hating it. <img src='http://www.zonediet.com/desktopmodules/ntforums/images/emoticons/smile.gif' height='20' width='20' border='0' title='Smile' align='absmiddle'>

Sarah, I hear you, sometimes you just want to eat what everyone else is eating. I don't like to make an issue of food, and so I don't.

We had a party for my daughter, who turned 13. The usual family get-together. I had complete control over the food being served. I bought a cake from an Amish bakery, better than store-bought, but didn't have to make it myself. I also served a veggie platter with hummus dip and another store-bought dip, a cheese/cracker platter (triscuits), a fruit platter (strawberries, blueberries, fresh pineapple), and some tortilla chips with salsa. A friend also brought along some taco dip.

My plan was to stick to what I knew I could have to stay in the Zone. But, the lure of the chocolate cake was strong, as I was curious to know how it tasted. Well, the cake did send me over the edge. So, I was OOZ last evening. No hunger, but definitely foggy.

Anyway, point is that I don't feel guilty over the cake. I was curious, I took it and accepted the consequences. I moved on, I am not going to sit here and feel bad for doing that. And, my curiosity is satisfied, I know that this cake is a good one and I can serve it again and know that it definitely IS better than store-bought, and I don't have to take the time to bake!

BTW, I didn't suffer the hangover today. I feel that I am back in the Zone without much trouble at all. Now, if the "insult" from yesterday had been any worse than a small piece of cake, maybe things would be different, but things seem to be in control today.

Hi CC! Glad you don't feel guilty about the cake...and glad it didn't cause you the hangover either...sometimes I get the hangover, and sometimes I dont...

Last night I also had chocolate...Ben and Jerry's frozen yogurt...I knew I shouldn't eat it, but did it anyway...I actually didn't feel horrible today! I still got up early and worked out. And I went 100% back in the Zone today.

At least I don't cheat every day. Just once in a while.

Good luck to everyone!

Hi Enza -- {{{big hugs}}} to you for posting! As you may have seen over in the Accountability thread, I also have been dealing with the repercussions of overeating Saturday night. Depending on what and how much I eat OOZ, it seems to take my body 1-3 days to get completely back to those good Zone effects. I'm just into the third day and I'm ALMOST there. Just wanted to let you konw how grateful I am that you posted -- it helps so much to know that I'm not the only one dealing with these feelings :-) !!

OH, Laurie! I should say that I was quite surprised by my reaction this weekend. It normally DOES take me longer to get back in the Zone, but I think it has to do with how badly OOZ one goes. An entire day or even a really heavy meal would definitely do me in. In that case, it WOULD take me several days for re-entry! I think that it helped that I ONLY had the cake, and the rest of the food was relatively harmless.

I just want to get my thoughts away from the feeling of guilt over what I have done. I KNOWINGLY ate the cake, I accepted the responsibility, and there is no need for me to be wallowing over it later on.

And, it is an act that is likely to happen again. I never say never to any food, I really have worked hard on taking those "good" and "bad" labels away from food. Most all food has some place in our lives, some value. Not that I am giving myself license to eat badly, but I have learned over time that it is OK to let myself enjoy a slice of cake on a special occasion.

Hi again,
Hi Laurie, nice to meet you.

I hope to feel better tomorrow.

Hi Cranberry -- I am actually surprised at how long it's taking me to get back into the Zone -- my OOZ eating on Saturday was late-night 1-2 am (typical danger time for me), and not a huge amount of food (although certainly more than a few tastes!). I think the longer I eat healthfully, the more of a "shock" it is to my system when I eat that much OOZ (Enza, this may be what's happening with you too). So the fact that it's taking my body a bit longer to recover may actually be a good sign!

I'm totally with you on losing the guilt -- I'm not feeling guilty as much as just frustrated with myself. I KNOW how good I feel when I'm eating healthfully, and I KNOW how I feel when I don't, and I KNOW that those few moments of enjoyment (which aren't even all that enjoyable) are completely not worth it -- and yet, I do it anyway :-( ... so those are the negative feelings I'm dealing with. I'm just hoping that each of these are learning experiences for me to be stronger and wiser next time!

Truthfully, my goal is to be able to go (in a minor way) OOZ once in a while and handle it as opposed to letting it escalate into serious OOZ overeating. I know it sounds wrong to strive for going OOZ, but I know that I have to be able to work imperfection into the program in order to sustain it for the long term. Does that make sense or sound crazy?

That makes complete sense to me!

I think that some people are able to control their circumstances better than others. Not me! Even after zoning for 5+ years, I would still go for a cinnamon roll, or whatever. Even knowing that it is not good for me, and that it is not going to keep me in the Zone.

It is not a matter of learing, I know before I eat it that it is not on the favorable list. And, I know it may make me feel lousy later.

The key to not letting it escalate, IMO, is to give yourself 3 bites. One bite is that bite that you are craving. The second bite is "the meal"-take a nice bite, chew and enjoy the flavor. The last bite is the one that you will remember. Then, stop after that.
(the stopping part is the part that I struggle with-lol)

Oooh -- I LOVE the 3-bite approach -- I'm definitely going to use it! But I'll have to add a 4th step -- 4) bury the rest in the trash ;-) !!

Yes, Barry Sears has written about 3 bites being all that's needed to satisfy a craving. There's lots of helpful info to be found in in books.

Great info found in those books (although, I have heard of the 3-bite system in other weight management programs, as well).

But, if you don't have access to the books, then the forum is an excellent place to come for information!

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
