Ok, I'm new - in fact, I haven't started the Zone. My (wonderful) orthopedic surgeon recommended the Zone. He lives by it, and I don't know how old he is, but he's in great shape! If I'm supposed to have 11 blocks each of carbs, proteins and fats (11-11-11, isn't that what that means?), and a blueberry shake is a 3 block meal, how is that reconciled? The shake has 9 gr carbs, 7 gr protein, and 3 gr fat. So what makes it a 3 block meal? If I get 11 grams of carbs per day, does this shake take up 9 of them? Say it ain't so, because it looks so yummy! And what's wrong with bananas? |

Hi Malena, welcome! Each Zone block contains 3 grams of fat, 9 grams of carb, and 7 grams of protein. So if you require 11 blocks per day, you actually get a total of 99 grams of carb per day. If your blueberry shake has 3 grams of fat, 9 grams of carb, and 7 grams of protein, that's only one block (good for a snack), so to make it a 3-block meal, you'd make a triple portion. Then you'd have eight more blocks to spread over the rest of the day.
Bananas have a higher glycemic load than many other fruits, which is why they are recommended only in moderation for the Zone. 1/3 of a banana is equivalent to one carbohydrate block, so if you ate a whole banana at a 3-block meal, you wouldn't be able to have any other carbs with it. You get more bang for your buck by choosing vegetables or fruits like berries or apples for your carbs. It is not recommended to use unfavorable carbs for more than 25% of your carbs at a meal. I like to use a small chunk of frozen banana in my smoothies, or mix in banana slices with other more favorable fruits when I do eat them. |

I am trying to get all my ducks in a row and start within the next day or so -- I don't understand the block -- is each serving of protein one block or is it grams that = a block?? Any advice for getting off caffeine |

Christine I can get you off coffee painlessly......first get down to one cup a day, then switch to Morning Thunder, a black tea and yerba mate' blend. Yerba mate is full of antioxidants and has a more healthful stimulant than coffee, and less strong. It's called matteine. Black tea alone could do the job also. Just a strong cuppa bl. tea in the morning and Bob's your uncle. P.S. the blocks are explained under Quick Start Guide over on the right..... |

Uh, I hate to inform you, but matteine is a myth created for an unscrupulous marketing campaign. There is no such thing. The very chemical explanation given for the existence of mattenine is impossible and obviously written by someone with no chemical background. Yerba Matte contains caffeine. Usually the same amount as coffee, but sometimes more. It would be easy to wean yourself off coffee with yerba mate because you are usually drinking at least the same amount of caffeine. That being said, I like yerba mate, and it is definitely better for you than coffee. Coffee is very acidic and contains some tannins that are not good for you if taken daily. interesting.....it doesn't feel at all like caffeine, but at any rate I like the effect and it is high in antioxidants. Coffee has this intense way of focussing the mind that neither black tea nor mate' has. Mate' gives a "smooth ride" kind of lift. |

| Malena, I'd suggest you read more about the zone to gain a better understanding. The fat helps to maintain lower insulin levels by controlling the amount of time it takes for the carbs in your meals enter your bloodstream, . |

Hi all, I'm just looking at the Zone for the first time, and I've read the Zone Food Blocks page, and I just want to make sure I'm reading this right. Each item listed is only one block? And each meal should have three blocks of each, correct? So, I know that bacon is a bad choice, but for three blocks of protein, I would be able to eat nine slices at a meal, or three hotdogs? And broccoli is a good choice, but I'd have to eat nine cups? I must have misunderstood. Can you clarify for me? Thanks for your help! |

Yes, one block.
Yes you'd eat 3 blocks of each.
Yes to the bacon and hot dogs (if your hot dogs contain aboout 7 grams of protein to each hot dog).
If you chose to eat broccoli for all your C blocks yes, it is 9, but no one eats tamount of broccoli at one time. Simply take as much broccoli as you want . If it's 1/2 block, then make up the rest of you C blocks for the meal from other carb choices (that would be another 2.5 blocks for a 3 block meal) . |

| So, say you want to buy hot dogs or sausage or something at the store.. prepacked.. How would I fiugre it out into blocks at home? I am on a three block of each per meal.. so, should I take the Protein ammount and break it up into sections? Like say it has 14g protein (just making this up), so that would cost me 2 protein blocks and still leave me with one open protein block to fill for that meal? So, maybe add a cheese or something for the last protein block and now I have three block.. then move on from there? By figuring out fats and carbs the same way for the hot dogs?? Thanks! As you can tell I am new here!! But, I think it is wonderful, just have to figure out how to break stuff up in blocks that are not listed on the food list... |

Hi D... yes, that's the way to do it. Make sure to look at the serving size when you read the labels.. some of them are tricky... remember you fats... those are important... avocado, almonds, olive oil and avocado oil are my favorite fats... also use mayonaise... Also I llike to save 1/2 or 1 Carb block each meal for fruit, so I can have it at the end, as dessert. Welcome to the zone. |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
