Anyone please. In the original book where the 1-2-3 method is used. Giving a list of pick two of each category and three for one, measured in pre-calculated portions I guess. Then there is a list of favorable and Unfavorable. I have many questions, but to start because I just ate it, is under favorable, cubed pineapple is listed, and was in my morning recipe. Under UNFAVORABLE diced pineapple is there. Now not to split hairs but there can only be one answer. How can canned pineapple cut one way or another be so different? Diced or cubed. What is the difference if the measure is the same? If it is fresh pineapple, there is not one part of the pineapple that is favorable and the rest unfavorable. Can it be a type-o people ask or an oversight? We cant give that a consideration. Plus it says on page 213 Fruits, fresh frozen Or canned light. It is this sort of controversy that makes one lose faith in the information amongst the other things. Like last night I saw for dinner a tuna sandwich using two slices of bread. Duh confused again. I know strictness is unliked by some, but I just want the information to be accurate and then I will adjust switch, make substitutions, etc... from there. Any comments? Suggestions? Anyone feeling the same way? Well I know you are cause I read alot of frustration. But I want to figure this out before I give up on it again. |

thanks, so it changed. The block method is the same as in the week in the zone portions? So why even sell the old book anymore if it is wrong and updated with different foods that were thought to be fine and now they are not. |

Sandra, I can't answer your question regarding why the old book is still being sold with outdated information. It might be nice if there could be a list of book corrections posted somewhere, so that the reader can gain knowledge about what has changed. And, if you ever need some clarification, then I think that you can find someone in the forums to help out, or check out zone chat. |

Sue I dont understand, you say that pineapples are outdated and no longer a part of the zone diet. (guess pineapples must have changed), but since I read that, I decided to look up the 7 day meal planner for women ON THIS SITE! Guess what the number one breakfast on Day 1, is? What I ate this morning, which calls for Pineapples in the cottage cheese. Where do you get your information? I hear you and I am sure you feel you are right, but the books and this site are just not on the same page as some of the things you have said. (sorry). Someone shed some light on "the new zone'? Maybe that should be the next title of the next zone book. I believe there are many things in that book that do not make zone sense and it should be made common knowledge that it is not a correct book to follow or adapt to the zone diet any longer. The coconut thing happened to on the other thread. What I found was that he says it is fine in moderation because it is loaded with Omega 3's and low in calories. Not his first choice, but not ....Coconut oil has no place on the zone diet. Or maybe you read something in one place and I read it on zone drs site too saying something different. |

sandra, even though pineapples are downgraded to unfavorable, they still can and should be used at times. They are healthful. Unfavorable means you can still use it but make it a smaller part of your day's plan. |

Yes, as janet posted, unfavorable foods can be included in the Zone diet. For those interested in coconut oil, here's the info from Drsears.com on coconut oil again. Incidentally, coconut oil has the same amount of calories as other fats do, abut 120 calories per tablespoon. 1 Coconut oil - Relevance: 1007 Q: Dear Dr. Sears, I understand that we should try to balance the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in our diets. I also understand that monounsaturated oil is beneficial presumably because it does not contain either of these two fatty acids. What about coconut oil? It too does not contain either of these fatty acids. People who rely on coconut oil have a low incidence of heart and other major degenerative diseases. A: Coconut oil is rich in saturated fat, and eventually much of it is in the form of shorter-chain fatty acids that can increase LDL cholesterol levels. It is much lower in monounsaturated fat than many of the oils that I recommend. But as with all oils, it can be used in moderation since it contains very little if any Omega-6 fatty acids. http://www.drsears.com/SearchIndexer/tabid/467/itemid/9026/Default.aspx - 8/24/2007 11:32:33 AM 2 Coconut oil - Relevance: 1007 Q: Dear Dr. Sears, What is you opinion on coconut oil? In the tropics where I live people say it is healthy. Thanks, Mercedes S. A: Dear Mercedes, Coconut oil is rich in tocotrienols, which have significant anti-oxidative potential, but it is composed of saturated fats. Many of those saturated fats consist of short-chain fatty acids that go directly to the liver via the portal vein and rapidly consume stores of liver glycogen. Without adequate levels of liver glycogen, it is difficult to replenish blood sugar levels for optimal brain function and satiety. You will get a far more powerful anti-oxidant effect by consuming extra-virgin olive oil. Coconut oil can be used in moderation since it contains very little, if any, omega-6 fatty acids. http://www.drsears.com/SearchIndexer/tabid/467/itemid/10120/Default.aspx - 8/24/2007 11:33:24 AM 3 Omega-3s - Relevance: 1004 Q: Dear Dr. Sears, My diet consists of organic meat, local seafood, lots of raw veggies and cooked veggies, olive oil, avocados, olives, some sprouted seeds, coconut oil for cooking, fruit, very little grain. If I do eat grain, it's basmati brown rice or hemp bread, which states that the grains are sprouted. I supplement with a super food powder, full spectrum vitamin E, vitamin C and a teaspoon of Carlson's Cod Liver Oil. Just about everything that I eat is organic. I stay in the Zone. I practice yoga daily. My health is very good. Everything is very good. My question concerns supplementing with omega-3s. I've read some negative stuff about it, and I'm wondering what your feelings are about it. Is it necessary to supplement with omega-3s if you have good eating habits? If I stopped the Omega-3 supplement, just to see if there is a change in my body and/or brain, how long would it take to notice a difference? I look forward to hearing from you. Most Sincerely, Martha O. A: Dear Martha, Your blood will tell whether or not you are consuming enough omega-3 fatty acids by the AA/EPA ratio. You are doing everything well, except using coconut oil (switch to extra-virgin olive oil) and taking the cod liver oil. Although cod liver contains EPA and DHA, it is also very contaminated with PCBs and dioxins. I would switch to a much higher-purity product like OmegaRx. Stopping fish oil consumption will generate a rise in the AA/EPA ratio within four weeks. As that ratio increases, so does your likelihood for developing chronic disease at an earlier age. http://www.drsears.com/SearchIndexer/tabid/467/itemid/10076/Default.aspx - 8/24/2007 11:33:22 AM |

Sandra, I can hear your frustration. Quite honestly, I think that if the website is here to teach people to eat in the Zone, and the books are written to teach people how to eat in the Zone, that these tools should not have so much unfavorable carb in them! Just as an example, the breakfast that Sandra is talking about is day 1 of the women's 7-day menu planner. She is to eat 1 cup of pineapple, along with 1/3 cup of mandarin oranges. This breakfast contains 66% unfavorable carb. One of the basic zone guidelines is to limit your unfavorable carbs to no more than 25%. Now, I agree with Janet, that we need not eliminate the unfavorable carbs, but on the other hand, how is anyone even going to reach the Zone if the #1 meal does not even follow zone guidelines? I hear so many other complaints about the recipes. A newbie will write in about a meal that they had, and then one of the veterans here will write about why that meal didn't work (too much unfavorable carb, not enough veggies, I am sure you have seen it). Well, then, the writer will say "I got this meal from the site" or "I got this meal from the book". How do we respond to that? Well, I can't. I will agree with Sandra, that if the website and the books are there to teach how to live the Zone lifestyle, then there really shouldn't be all of these recipes that break the cardinal rules. And, again, I am not saying that we can't eat anything unfavorable. That is unreasonable, we would miss out on the nutritional value of these unfavorable foods. But, I would LOVE to see a meal plan that truly sticks to the guidelines! (stepping off the soapbox) |

Once again CC thank you for your logical and intelligent input. You said it all. Exactly what I am thinking and so are others. If the book is wrong for the first 7 days then what the h----? That is all I am pointing out as well. Lets get people who want to do it right the chance and give the right information so they see the results of the diet. Dont be putting things not favorable on the number one lists of recipes. Put in things good for the diet and leave things listed as not favorable off of the introductory diets. AND warn that these are not first choice. I didnt know. It was not indicated anywhere at all. So no one else will. I would like to take my learning curves not due to me, and share them with other innocent people who also wish to give this a real try. Thank you again CC. |

| Sue K it is just my conclusion in the short time I have been on here that you are rigid. You seem to love to "prove points" that may not really be the point. You do find exerpts but there are others out there as well that I am not going to copy and paste to get into a battle with anyone. My ego is not centered around this. I have viable points for me and for others. Forget the coconut oil okay? I will still ingest it no matter what as I know what it is and I am great with it. AS far as putting things in introductory recipes when one is learning that is not a favorable food, that is all wrong. You dont teach someone to drive by hitting other cars. Because what is the use? Pineapples are not only in those recipes, they are listed as favorable and unfavorable. That makes no sense at all. Only the way the were cut which as I said, it stupid. I have taught many things and I know how people learn and this has many many problems that need clarified or rectified and stop selling books that have been deemed old and wrong. AND including the recipes in this website. Why not put dominos pizza? If it is not belonging then get it out and MAKE IT CLEAR FOR PEOPLE. |

Sue maybe you should start your own thread on your quotes you found on coconut oil. This oil has been in the news heavily and has helped people lose 20 to 50 pounds. Fight infection. Help their skin. I am not typing all the benefits because books are written about it. Do you have any personal experience with it, or are you quoting something chosen you read? And that makes you an expert? It is an anti bacterial, anti fungal, helps candida, and helps a sluggish thyroid. Cant be any worse than all the wrong information in the books and on the site for wrong foods. At least it has nutritional value and disease control. This is the las tthing I really want to debate regarding coconut oil. Thank you. Maybe you could find some quotes on the foods in the recipes like wheat and pineapple just to name a few to copy and paste on here. Thanks |

Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.
This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.
The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.
His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.
– Carter B.
I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,
– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.
I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.
– Kathryn S.
I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!
– Rob Y.
I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.
– Lyn S.
Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!
– Jack J.
I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.
– Curtis Y.
My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.
– Larry C.
I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!
– Joe W.
Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.
Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).
There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.
