This is my first full week on the Zone. I did the low carb thing before and lost 75lbs. I know you are thinking why did you switch. I switch because I kept missing fruits basically. Weird I know.
I'm having alot of trouble in the evening. I eat my dinner and then I can't stop eating. I never had this problem before. I'm not sure if I'm not getting enough or what.
I'm suppose to have 11 blocks per day.
6:00 a.m. zone cereal with blueberries; skim milk
9:30 a.m Zone bar
12:00 Wendy's chilli; side salad
5:00 p.m. Subways turkey and bacon flatbread with loads of veggies
I'm too ashamed to tell you what I ate after this.
I drink loads of water.
I know if looks like there is alot of eating out but I can't really help it.
The way I work I'm on the road or have lunch or dinner with clients.
I know that everything I have read says to have a snack and get back in the zone but I was so mad at myself I just couldn't.
I'm taking 4 fishoil also a day; plue the sea weed stuff.
This has been going on all week.
Any advice would be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks,
Cynthia

Well, you're almost there, believe it or not! Yeah, technically you could do better than a flatbread....but....
Here's a tip from me, not an expert and certainly not a perfectionist, so some of my strategies are not official, but if I just need something more, I have a handful of pecans or almonds, (or last night, a large spoonful of almond butter! couldn't find a pc of celery to have it on!) Let's call it damage control! Then I wait for time to have my evening "snack"! I make a half a smoothie, with chocolate pwdr, strwberries, prot. powder, stevia, etc. - I have it all worked out- and it is so satisfying.
when desperate, have nuts! (I still lose ...or don't gain)

Welcome Cynthia!

Great choice to switch to the Zone and supplement with fish oil and Sea Health Plus!

You're eating like that after dinner becasue you haven't yet quite gained control of you bloood sugar, which is causgin you body to produce more insulin than it needs. It usually will take a few days of eating Zone balanced meals and snacks to lower your insulin levels into the Zone. Also, your body's adjusting to te changes during the first week s do eating in the Zone. My comments on your menu, the bread is contributing to you hunger, and you probably don't have enough fat in the breakfast because of the skim milk. Eat some nuts with that breakfast. Skim milk is fain, as loong as you remember to addd a little more consuming it.

Here's info about fat in the Zone that will help you:

The block method takes into account that half (1.5 g) of the 3 grams fat needed to balance each Zone block is hidden in your protein choice. The other half (another 1.5 g) is in the added fat block. For every block of fat free protein you eat, you would add 1 extra monounsaturated fat block in order to get the full 3 grams of fat needed in every completely balanced block of P, C and F.

Some common fat free proteins eaten on the Zone diet are egg whites, protein powder, some deli-style meats, and some soy products.

If it doesn't bother your stomach, try taking at least some of your fish oil at supper time.

Manuel, the "world's fattest man," takes fish oil with every meal to keep him satied.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I did better yesterday. Course I was home and I was able to control things alot better.
Here is my yesterday
9:00 Southwestern Omelet(recipe on site)
Orange
1:00 Brownie Smoothie
4:00 Zone bar
5:30 Pork Loin
Broccili
Green beans with Onions
Peach
9:00 Yogart with blueberries
Do you think this is more balanced? I really need something quick for breakfast. I leave my house so early I barely have time to get ready for week. I don't like giving up sleep.
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Cynthia

Hi Cynthia!

It looks better to me for the following reasons:

The breakfast has enough fat, as compared to the skim milk and cereal.

There's no bread at lunch, as there was with the Subway meal.

The carb in all of your meals yesterday were more solid than the Wendy's chili meal you had listed before. Liquid carb does not work well for some people regardless of whether it is favorable (best carb) or not. The reason is the larger surface area of liquids as compared to solids; it translates into the carb getting into your bloodstream faster. If you're a more carb sensitive person, liquids aren't going to give you the best insulin control. I've never been able to stay in the Zone with Wendy's chili, (too watery), but I do very well with a thicker chili. The reason I came up with the brownie batter smoothie is that a particular smoothie I liked in one of the Zone books contained too much carb and was too liquid to keep me in the Zone (I based my shake on the "Zoned Cocoa-Banana Cherry Freeze" on pages 72-73 of THE SOY ZONE").

One caution, take a closer look at your yogurt and you’ll find it probably already contains enough carb without the addition of the blueberries, but needs a little fat added. Here are a couple yogurt snacks that would be more Zone balanced:

1. Mix together 1/2 cup plain yogurt,1 teaspoon peanut butter and some vanilla or almond flavoring (I like the alcohol free flavorings best: look for the Frontier brand)

2. Mix together 3/8 cup yogurt with 1/4 scoop of Zone Protein Powder, vanilla or almond flavoring and peanut butter; stir in 1/8 cup of blueberries.

Macadamia nut butter, almond butter or almonds can be substituted for the peanut butter.

Remember the your body is still adjusting to the Zone too. You're making some good observations about how you feel. They can be invaluable for tweaking to meet your needs. A tip would be to book mark this thread and use it as a food diary for future reference.

Try a Zone shake in the morning. They work very well for me. To adjust for my carb sensitivity, instead of milk, I mix them with unsweetened low carb soy milk (West Soy Unsweetened Soy Milk) and eat a couple blocks of raw almonds with it.

Thanks Sue for the advice. I'm really having trouble figuring this all out.
I don't do well on a liquid diet either. I think that is on Saturday my meals and snacks were so close together. Because of the brownie shake.

I'm using Dannon's Non-Fat Yoguart, is that a good choice? I have some Kroger carb master yoguart that only has 3 net carbs and 6 fat I believe it has fruit in it already. Will that work?
I kinda like the cereal in the morning. What can I have with it to give me my 3 blocks? I tried it this morning with 2% milk, a half of a zone bar for a snack at 10:00 a.m. and I'm starving and it is like 11:00 a.m., 1 hour until lunch.
So I don't think I had enough of something.

Here is my day yesterday, I did pretty good:
Breakfast 2 egg beaters; 3 slice of bacon; mandrian oranges, diced peaches
Lunch pork loin, green beans, broccili, diced peaches
Snack half of a zone bar
Dinner Roast beef; 1 pickled egg, green beans; mixed raw vegs; quarter of sweet potato;
Snack zone bar.

I hope you don't mind me pretty my journal on here I really like you given your advice on if it is O.K. or not. Any adjustments I can make will be helpful.
Thanks,
Cynthia

Cynthia,

I think yesterday looks pretty good!

Here are a few things...
Take a look at your protein choices: bacon, pork loin, roast beef. These are all fair protein choices, but these meats contain higher levels of AA (arachidonic acid). This will not necessarily mean that you are OOZ (out of the Zone), but it is better to reduce the amount of AA that you are eating, in order to reduce silent inflammation.

Looks like you have a pretty good mix of fruits and veggies. Just FYI, I generally can't make a meal work for me if it is all fruit for carbs. Not sure if this is true for you, but just something to be aware of.

I use plain yogurt, I find that there are too many additives in the flavored varieties. I don't know about the kroger carb master yogurt, the nutritional breakdown is fine, but I don't know what the ingredients look like. If it has artificial sweetener, this will negatively impact your efforts to get in the Zone.

Cranberry,
Yes the carbmaster has splenda in it. I didn't know I couldn't have splenda. I have been using it in everything like my tea, on my cereal, in my shakes.
I wondered about the protien I had yesterday. The pork was leftovers and the dinner was a birthday party and the only protein choose.
So you don't buy the non fat just the plain yoguart?
Thanks for you help I'm still learning and it looks like I have a long way to go.
Thanks

Hi Cynthia!

It's fine to post you menus here!

Dannon non fat is fine for the Zone if is it's the plain version (no sweeteners). Keep in mind that if you choose non fat instead of low fat yogurt, you need to add an extra fat block from every block of it you eat (refer back to the fat info that I posted earlier in this thread). I don't know about Kroger carb master. I found nutrition label info for it but not the ingredient list (not even on the Kroger site!). If it contains corn syrup, corn starch, modified food starch, etc. I’d say stick with the plain Dannon.

For the Zone Cereal breakfast, decide whether you have focused or unfocused hunger afterwards (focused = you're hungry and otherwise have good energy and good concentration; unfocused = you're hungry with one or more of the following symptoms: lack of ability to concentrate, tired or sleepy, foggy or spacey, jittery, anxious, sickish feeling in stomach, faint, etc.). If your hunger ifs focused, add a block of fruit to the meal. If it’s unfocused, you could try mixing 1/2 cup of the cereal with one of the yogurt snacks I mentioned in my previous post, instead of milk. Again, remember to add another block of fat if you choose nonfat yogurt. If you try that and you're still hungry afterward, then try also adding 3 more fat blocks to the cereal and yogurt The extra fat will help to give you better insulin control to prevent hunger, but will not be enough fat to interfere with the loss of stored body fat. If you're still getting hungry with that, I'd say maybe that cereal breakfast just isn't going to work for you.

Your meals look pretty good. I'd add some monounsaturated fat to each one of those meals (or maybe you did and haven't mentioned it). Pork and beef are not the best protein choices for the Zone because of the fat they contain. It would be good to take it easy with beef and pork by not eating them too often. The best cut of beef and pork for the Zone is tender loin that has been well trimmed to remove as much of the fat as possible. Some better choices are chicken breast, turkey breast, egg whites, soy foods, protein power, wild caught fish and seafood (as opposed to farmed), and low fat dairy products. Pickled eggs are another thing you wouldn’t want to eat very often, most importantly because of the yolks. Also, many times they contain sugar and a lot of salt.

Keep experimenting with that breakfast and let us know what happens! Good luck!

Thanks for the update, Cynthia.

Splenda is up to you, but there is some evidence that all artificial sweeteners will basically take you out of the zone by raising insulin levels and subsequently you begin to feel hunger and cravings.

I read somewhere that of all the artificial sweeteners, Sears prefers Splenda over the rest. But, it is still artificial, and it still works against insulin control.

I buy plain yogurt (sometimes fat free, but sometimes I also get the lowfat or even the full fat). I use it in my smoothies, and sometimes I mix in some zoned shake mix into it with peanut butter or other nut butter, for a snack.

I imagine that the reason why you are here is to learn a few things about the Zone, so don't worry about asking questions. I feel blessed that I am able to help!

Hi Cynthia!

Your's and Cran's previous replies were't showing here for me at the time I posted my previous reply. That's why my post overlaps with things Cran posted and doesn't mention address your Splenda info. I would advise you not to add Splenda for the most part and instead, have it just once in a while if you feel you really need it in something.

Cran & Sue Thanks for all the advice it is really helping.
I did the yoguart and cereal with peanut butter this morning. I really wasn't hungary until after I ate my snack of half a zone bar. I'm wondering if that could be it. I was still focused just really hungry where I was uncomfortable.
I did grilled chicken salad today with an apple. It had alot of veggies. I didn't think it was going to be 10 cups so that is why I brought a small apple.
Other half of zone bar for snack
Dinner was kids choice tonight. So we had veggie soup. I had that come raw veggies and a little chicken because I was afraid it wouldn't be enought protein in the soup. I also had a few almonds. Not sure how close I was but I'm still focus and has some energy left after a very stressful day.
Not sure what my snack is going to be.
I don't have any of the zone shake mixes, I will order them next time I ordered.
Thanks again for all your help

You're welcome Cynthia!

Just curious, are you eating Dr Sears Zone bars by Zone Labs, or another brand of Zone bars? Regardless of the answer, it sounds like they might not be working for you. You could try eating some nuts with the bar.

Did you have the same hunger after you ate the 1/2 bar in the afternoon?

Sue,
I'm using Dr. Sear's bars.
I didn't really notice being hungry in the afternoon.
I thought maybe it was the cereal and yoguart.
I got up early and made a Southwestern omelet and ate my half at 10:00 and I'm hungry right now. I didn't see your thoughts about eating some nuts with it until I was already at work. I will bring some tomorrow.
I even tried a different bar.
I'm actually watching the clock and wondering if I should just ate the other half.
Still alert and focused.
Not sure.

Hi Cynthia!

Hungry while still alert and focused, with plenty of energy, is an indication that you need to add carb. Another thought would be to add more carb (berries ) to the cereal if your hunger is the focused type. See if that helps. Still, it could very well be that starting your day off with the cereal just isn't going to make it for you.

I also noted that you ate half an omelet for breakfast today. I'm assuming that a 1.5 or 2 block breakfast. It might be better for you to begin the day with a full 3 block breakfast.

Oh ok! Good!

Also remember that your body is still adjusting. I don't know how you were eating before you recently began the Zone, but it could be impact how long it takes your body to get used to the changes in your diet.

I just reviewed your posts in this thread and noticed you're taking 4 Omega Rx capsules a day (or Eico Rx, whichever you have). The dose recommended by Dr. Sears for those beginning the Zone diet is 8 caps a day. Temporarily increasing to 8 capsules daily might help you with that morning hunger.

We'll get it figured out!

Maybe just a quick one: I usually eat 150g (don't know how many cups) cottage cheese and some fruit in the morning. After a period of about one week my body got used to eat and I can make it exactly 4h without hunger. I also don't like to much time in the morning because I love sleeping

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. He holds 13 U.S. Patents in the areas of intravenous drug delivery systems and hormonal regulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

A turning point in his research occurred in 1982. That year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for discoveries of the role that specialized hormones, known as eicosanoids, play in the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Since eicosanoids are only generated from dietary fat, Dr. Sears reasoned that one could apply intravenous drug delivery principles to nutrition in order to control these exceptionally powerful hormonal responses with laser-like precision. In essence, his approach treats food as if it were a drug.

This area of his research led to various patents in the area of hormonal control by essentially using food as an oral drug delivery system to modulate eicosanoids especially for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological patients.

The impact of Dr. Sears’ revolutionary work in the dietary control of hormonal response began with the publication of his landmark book, The Zone. Since its publication in June 1995, The Zone has sold more than 2,000,000 hardcover copies, and became a #1 best seller on the New York Times book list. In addition, The Zone has been translated into 22 languages indicating a worldwide response to Dr. Sears’ research. His second book, Mastering the Zone, published in 1997, also became a New York Times bestseller with hardcover sales in excess of 500,000 copies to date. His third book, Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes, published in 1997, quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks of 1997 and an another New York Times bestseller. The Anti-Aging Zone was published in 1999 and provides the molecular insights into how the Zone Diet can reverse the aging process. The Omega Rx Zone, published in 2002, explores the molecular foundation of chronic disease and how high-dose fish oil can dramatically reverse it. His latest book The Anti-Inflammation Zone discusses how to combat silent inflammation in order to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many other inflammatory conditions—and how to reverse these conditions if they are already present. To date more than 5 million hardcover copies of his Zone books have been sold in the United States.

His research has elevated food from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug. Because of his revolutionary research, Dr. Sears has been a frequent guest on many national programs such as 20/20, Today, Good Morning America, CBS Morning News, CNN, and MSNBC.

Dr. Sears continues his ongoing research as President of Zone Labs, a biotechnology company in Danvers, MA as well as the President of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation in Marblehead, MA. In addition to continuing research on the hormonal effects of food, Dr. Sears has expanded his research in developing innovative dietary approaches to treating cancer and neurological conditions, as well as his on-going work in treating cardiovascular diease and type 2 diabetes.

I have been taking the Fish Oil for over 3 years now. I am 44 playing hockey and working out. The Fish oil helps with the pain that I get from playing hockey. It greatly enhances my performance on the ice and while working out. I have noticed a big difference in my energy, attentiveness and memory. If I miss a day for whatever reason, I notice a huge difference and it feels like something is missing. Anyway that is my short little story and it comes from the heart.

– Carter B.

I am a nutritionist and Ph.D. doctor of health and nutrition. For Dr. Sears to figure out balancing fat, carbs and protein, is really beyond brilliant. It is a milestone in diet history. I go over people's diet/emotional journals. Mostly all the time, we discover that the fatigue, irritability, unstable emotions were due to the imbalance in their diet. Using the Zone to balance them out, helps control weight, roller coaster emotions and gives them energy. Dr. Sears is so right when he says food is medicine. He has figured out the most powerful drug combination going, called The Zone.
Best and healthy wishes,

– Elaine W., Ph.D., N.C., M.A.

I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. I started getting exhausted again. I came back to Zone Labs and will continue with the fish oil for the rest of my life. I believe in the product and it makes a huge difference in my life. It makes a difference with my running as well. I also bring the bars and shakes with me on the road. It is almost impossible to eat the way I should at work. I haven't found the right secret. At least I have my Zone fish oil, bars, and shakes.

– Kathryn S.

I have been in the Zone, for about 1 month now. I wanted to share with you how wonderful I think this program is. I have been a personal trainer for almost 10 years and actively compete in numerous athletic activities. The Zone program has helped me to achieve a better awareness of my nutritional needs and the results I have seen are amazing! I have lost nearly 13 lbs since I have been in the Zone. I feel more mentally alert, more focused at work, have greater intensity during my training, have made significant strength gains, and just feel better over all. With that said, I would like to thank you for helping me in my quest for "super-health"!
Thank you!

– Rob Y.

I read 'The Zone' and as exactly as I could followed the advice for diet. I noted weight loss progress. Over six months, I lost 33 pounds. One year has passed since then. I have maintained the new weight, guided always by Zone concepts. The Zone is powerful - I have found it fantastic and I am very grateful to Dr Sears.

– Lyn S.

Before I stumbled across the Zone I was weighing close to two hundred pounds and I was depressed. I used to be a gymnast as a young man. I would think, "look at me now," when I looked in a mirror. The day I found 'The Zone' book, I was intrigued and as I read it the science made sense and so, I began to follow the "treatment". I began to lose weight and I was feeling way more energetic. I am forty two years old, I am very active and my weight is down to 162 lbs, 38 pounds lost on the Zone. I cycle, walk, jog, swim and I can now perform some of the more simple gymnastic skills I did twenty years ago...I literally feel like I have turned back the clock.
Thank you!

– Jack J.

I have been on the Zone diet for 7 years. I did not go on the diet to lose weight necessarily; but fairly quickly I lost 25 pounds, going from 190 to 165; from a 36-inch waist to a 32-inch waist. I primarily did the Zone to live healthier. My health is excellent now. I just turned 62 years old. My Zone is my eating lifestyle now; I seldom stray; and I do not miss anything. It is The Good Life.

– Curtis Y.

My wife's doctor told her to read "Enter the Zone" and to do the diet, so I told her I would do it with her. After only one week on the plan we went on a strenuous hike (the first of the year), and when we stopped at our favorite coffee shop on the way home I was able to get out of the car and stand upright and walk into the place without pain or stiffness. The Zone had eliminated all the inflammation that had always forced me to stumble all humped over into the coffee shop any time we skied or hiked all day.
Thank you, Doctor Sears.

– Larry C.

I used to have a lot of knee pain when I walked or ran. I have been taking Omega Rx for almost a year now, and rarely have any pain. I believe it is the anti-inflammation action of the oil. I feel smarter as well. Thanks for developing such a superior oil!

– Joe W.

Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.

– Jeremy S.

All polyphenols have antioxidant properties than can be measured by their Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC), but not all polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties. The polyphenols in Dr. Sears’ Zone Polyphenol Plus have been carefully chosen to have both.

Polyphenols are the phytochemicals that not only give fruits and vegetables their color, but also help regulate inflammation. In addition, polyphenols also activate the key enzyme (AMP kinase) that helps restore cellular ATP levels. Polyphenols also help regulate the activation of inducible inflammatory proteins (such as COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines).

There are more than 4,000 known polyphenols, and the richest sources are fruits and vegetables. In general, the more color a fruit or vegetable has, the richer the polyphenol content.

Zone Labs products are three times fresher than the minimum allowed by the Norwegian Medicinal Standard and European Pharmacopoeia Standards (based on average peroxide values).

Zone Labs starts with only wild, small fish from pristine Chilean waters and ends with proprietary validation and testing processes to achieve an IFOS certified 5 star rating.

8-Step Manufacturing Process - Quality Assured

Testing to specification all raw materials, bulk products, packaging material and finished products – always using stringent internal standards and in-process testing.

  1. Extraction of fish oil
  2. Winterization – remove limited amounts of saturated fats
  3. Absorption – remove heavy metals
  4. Preliminary Molecular Distillation – refining “touch up” to reduce contaminants
  5. Oil conversion to ethyl esters
  6. Ethyl ester thermal fractionation – remove additional saturated fats
  7. True Molecular Distillation – final refining to remove pcb’s and long-chain monoenes
  8. Rigid Processes – proprietary validation, inspection and encapsulation methods. Independent lab verification of IFOS requirements and certified 5 star rating

Clean Sources

No farmed fish. No large fish. Pristine waters.

Zone Labs starts with wild sardines & anchovies fished from cold, pristine waters off of South America where there are less environmental impurities.

A recommended serving of Zone Labs Ultra-Refined Concentrates delivers 8 times more omega-3’s than a typical retail fish oil supplement.

Most fish oil supplements have 30% or less of the healthy omega-3s EPA and DHA, with the remaining 70% of the capsule containing unbeneficial, lesser refined fatty acids that contribute to their bad taste and gastric side effects.

Getting a clinically valid dose of omega-3’s is easy with Zone Labs’ Ultra-Refined Omega-3 Concentrates.

Typical Retail Dose = 300mg omega-3

Standard Zone Dose = 2400mg omega-3
