How much jerky or dried fruits would be considered one block? Obviously one ounce of lean jerky would be far more protein than one ounce of lean meat.

Hi Bob,

You'd check on the label. One protein block contains 7 grams of protein. Dried fruit is unfavorble and you need only a small amount for a block. One tablespoon of raisins is one C block. Two dried prunes is one C block.

I will use dried fruits in salads, for example, I might use 3 dried apricots and count them as 1 block C.. is that correct (3 fresh apricots count as 1-block)?

Does the fact that they are "dried" change the carbohydrate count, or does it just change the GI (and make them unfavorable)?

Thanks

Hi Perry!

Yes, drying friut changes the GI/GL and does make them unfavorable. All dried fruit is considered unfavorable carb for the Zone. As you mentioned, my best guess is that the block amount would be the same as for frech apricots, 3 apricots, unless there are other carbs added to them (check lableing). I'd assume 3 to a block unless the nutritional labeling says other wise (total carb minus total fiber is the amount of you'd count; 9 grams to 1 C block). Also important will be how you feel 4 hours after eating it. Everyone's biochemistry is individual.

Thanks for the info. I use them sparingly in salads and in some Zone baking (muffins, pancakes, etc..). Dried cherry's can be really good! But it doesn't surprise me that they are unfavorable. They are pretty flavorfull though, so a little can go a long ways and not throw me outa "The Zone"!
