I recently read the book a week in the Zone. I got the basics but am having a little trouble fine-tuning when I stray away from the provided lists, especially with fats.

I looked at the dining out section. I saw things like a chicken cesar salad. From my experience, cesar dressing has like 20 grams of fat. How could that be okay if I am supposed to eat three blocks for a meal? (I'm 11 blocks a day). I see that each fat block on the list is suposed to have 1.5 grams of fat. Or some lists say that a hamburger is good. Is that now including fat of the protein. Maybe it would be easier to know the number of grams in each block. Help me, please!

For a 3 block meal, you should not go much over 9 grams of fat (at times, it is fine to go a few blocks over, but not excessively and not too often).

You can still have a chix caesar salad, but you can probably make a dressing with less fat, or perhaps purchase one on the shelf (although watch the labels carefully for ingredients). I don't know if there are any zoned recipes for a dressing, but you could also check that out.

A whole fat block is 3 grams, but the list has fat listed as 1.5 grams per block. It is assumed that most protein sources already have fat, and therefore contains 1/2 of our fat requirement. However, if you eat a fat free protein, then just double the fat blocks, so that you are getting a full 3-gram block of fat.

Cheryl,
In Zone Meals in Seconds there are quite a few salad dressing recipes that result in a creamy dressing using Nayonaise (that's soy based mayo) and yogurt as the base. To Crancat's point, read your labels on the package stuff. If you're eating out...ask for the dressing on the side and a wedge of lemon. There is typically lemon in caesar dressing and with the sprinkle of lemon over the greens & chicken it will help the dressing go further. Better would be to order the salad with olive oil & vinegar on the side, if available.

As for the hamburger question...the leaner the better. I always thought hamburger was a "fair" choice with the other categories "good" and "poor" choices of protein. Ground turkey and soyburger/crumbles may be considered similar "good" choices. The total fat and saturated fat of hamburger make it less favorable.

Hope that helps:-)
