Does anyone else here try and fit The Zone into a hectic work schedule?

I've just started out and realize that there are some days where eating right could be problematic. I'm working 12-hour night shifts right now, and will be going in tomorrow night after some days off. During the first day I usually stay up all day and try and make it through the night, so I'll be awake nearly 24 hours. Now...how the heck do I factor in my 11 blocks over the course of that time? Or do I eat 11 blocks x 2 because I'll be awake for longer?

Good qn. I'd carerfully space blocks according to the Zone timing guidelines, anbd probably add in a few extra blocks. But I wouldn't double the number of blocks. Prior to startign the Zone, how did you usually eat on these days?

In the past I'd eat about two meals during the day before work...and at work I'd probably eat 1 meal and a snack if I had time. I know, it doesn't really sound like a lot, but I seemed to make up for eating (and sleeping) on non-work days. Not the healthiest method of living, I know.

I might be able to space it out so that I have my dinner and "last" snack during the first portion of my shift (start at 8pm), and then later in the night have 1 more meal and 1 more snack. That would leave me with 13 blocks in total, and will hopefully be spaced out appropriately.

Oops. I guess that would make it 15 blocks.

Hi Linda:

If you don't mind me asking, What do you do for a living?

The block requirement is formulated for the 24 hour (With normal sleep in the middle) period. Remember, the body goes into replenish mode when it's sleeping, curing us from daily stress and getting us ready for a new day. When the body is not in Sleep-Mode, we need to eat every 3 to 4 hours to maintain controled insulin levels.

So on those long 24 hour days, make sure you're eating your meals and snacks to help you with energy and nutrients and PLEASE try to get more sleep in there, it works miracles for you, helping replenish much more of you for the future. :-)

I'm a security supervisor at a university campus. My shifts are unpredictable in terms of physical activity. Some shifts are quiet and I might spent most of my time at my desk, or I could be sprinting across the campus from call to call.

I know I really should get more sleep in on these days. It's just those days where I have to transition to my night schedule that throw me for a loop. :)

I work the twelve hour rotating shifts also - While I am not yet a Zone expert - I can tell you that preparation is the key to your eating. Plan ahead and have everything packed for your set of shifts.

I have done shift work in the past, I used to work a 12 hour night shift position at a hospital. However, I was not zoning at the time.

If it were me, though, I would plan it out so that you don't go longer than 4-5 hours without a zone meal or snack. You probably won't go over in your blocks by much, if at all. and, it is VERY important to get adequate sleep! It does make a huge difference.
