After many years of knowing about the Zone, my partner and I have decided to jump in head first. But we've run into some confusing issues!

We've done our lean body mass and body fat calculations, but based on the equations in "Enter the Zone", our protein requirements are the same, about 63 grams per day. But our block requirements totals 9 blocks. Does that sound right? How does that work? How would our meals/snacks look?

This seems awfully low. We're both 20-something females, although she's the more active of the two :P and 2 block meals seems really...well, small! We've also found sources online, as well as in '100 Top Zone Foods' and 'Zone Meals in Seconds' that most women need to consume 3 block meals. We're thoroughly confused!

Also, has anyone had problems with the online calculators on this site? None of them work for me, unless they aren't Mac friendly (even though I've tried 3 different browsers, one of them being Firefox, and still no luck).

Many thanks to all!

:)

Pat, i think the minimum daily block requirement recommendation is 11 blocks for an adult.

i'd recommend starting there and see what happens. it is much easier to egt active in the zone due to the extra energy you will have

the zone calculator doesn't work for me on linux, either. it works on windows.

come on zoneliving.com, don't force your viewers to use one operating system. get quality coders that can code for all the browsers and operating systems.

I'm Pat's partner. I *am* a small female and weigh about 118 lbs, with about 88lbs of lean muscle mass. I am more active...doing crossfit and heavy weight training about 3 times a week. Now...having said that, I'm sure that people are going to recommend I eat 11 blocks a day. But my questions is - will I still lose bodyfat? My main goal with the zone is to build muscle and lose some bodyfat. But by the calculations according to the book I should be consuming 9 blocks. That's a bit of a discrepancy...

Hi Pat and Linda,

Since the writing of "Enter The Zone", his first Zone book, Barry Sears has added a minimum block requirement of 11 blocks per day for all aduts. Incidentally, Linda, considering your LBM (88) and activity level (a factor of either .8 or .9), your daily block calculation would result in about 11 blocks, not the 9 that Pat had calculated. 11 blocks daily will still allow you to lose excess stored body fat. 11 provides only 6 more grams of fat daily than 9. The amount of fat in 11 blocks daily is still less than the amount your body requires in one day. Therefore, if you keep your insulin within Zone levels to ensure that you burn fat for energy, you'll lose some stored body fat.

Thanks so much! Eating the 3 block meals sounds like it will be easier than trying to shave all the recipes down to 2. Plus, I don't want to run out of energy or feel like I'm starving.

You're welcome. Also, I forgot to mention that Pat should also be able to lose excess stored fat while eating 11 blocks daily. The best way to have the optimal Zone experience, including success with losing excess stored fat, is to make insulin control your main focus. Learn all the tricks you can to put your meals and snacks to work for you to keep your insulin in the optimal range.
