I am new to this, It was recommended to me on another forum. From the calculator I need 19 blocks of each a day. What is a block? How many grams of each? Also I take an Omega 3 supplement now, will that count as part of my fat block. All help will be appreciated. Thank you

louis, 19 blocks is a lot. i take it you have a large lean body mass and exercise a lot. if you give details, we can gauge better.

1 block is composed of 9g C, 7g P and 3g F (primarily monunsaturated fat).

Think of it like a lego kit. you put the right amount of each piece into the bag so that the end result on the box is attainable. if you put too many red pieces and not enough black pieces, there will be problems.

fidn the zone food block guide on this site and it will tell you how much of a given food is required to get the block value for that food. for example, 1 oz. of chicken equates to 1 block of chicken. 1/2 an orange equates to 1 block carbohydrate and i think it is 3 almonds equate to 1 block fat*. if you are eating a 1 block snack, that's it - that's your meal. simple, no?

if you are eating a 4 block meal, multiply everything by 4 and that's it. a 5 block meal would multiply everything by 5 (5 ozs chicken, 2.5 oranges and 15 almonds). not a very diverse zone meal, but one nonetheless.

you can substitute blocks of on category type for another. let's say you didn't want all oranges for your 5 block meal. 1/2 an apple is 1 block, so you could have 1.5 oranges and 1 apple.

once you understand zone blocks, it makes making meals a snap.

it does take some time, to keep meditating on the concept and it will make more sense over time.

you can count the fish oil as fat or not. the zone doesn't have to be exact to work, so it will likely not matter too much in the end. almost every meal i make is off the target gram value by a few grams, one way or the other. that's ok. just get close and it will work fine.

*the zone food block guide assumes that 1.5g of F comes from your lean meat (in this case chicken) so it only adds an additional 1.5 blocks. this works well until you eat fat free protein. then you would double the 1.5g fat blocks to make up for the fat you aren't getting in your lean meat.

stick with it, louis - this way of eating is awsome and will invalidate all the old "rules" you thought existed. i'm 5'10.5" and down 21 lbs to 157.5 lbs while, at the same time, i've added 4-5 lbs of lean body mass (i can do twice as many bench press reps now as i could do just 3 months ago, probably 5 to 10 times the reps i could do when i started and was 21 lbs heavier).

oh, and my lifelong allergy problem disappeared when i started taking 2.5g epa+dha via eichorx.

i couldn't be more satisfied.
