I'm just starting on the zone diet, but have previously followed a 'clean eating' regimen, which has similar guidelines. The main difference between the clean eating guidelines and the zone is the amount of carbs (even good carbs) in a meal. The clean eating diet roughly matches the protein intake with carbs - visually even. There's not much talk about insulin-producing carbs vs fiber.

I've been enjoying eating loads of veg and fruit with my meals - but sometimes even find it a bit much. I am wondering if it is advisable on the zone diet to reduce my carb intake here and there. For example have a 3 block meal, but with 2 blocks of carbs?

Thanks.

Yes, that would still be acceptable for the Zone's P/C range of 0.6 to 1 (it would be around 1). If you try it, note how you feel at about 4 hours later. If you're getting hungry but feeling mentally focused, it would mean you need the dropped carb to stay in the Zone. In that case, you'd add some of that 3rd C block back, enough to eliminate the hunger.

Jill,

2 blocks C and 3 blocks P works out to a ration of 1.5.

that's 50% greater than the upper limit usually put forth by sears.

having said that, you might be ok to do that every once in a while if the regular plan isn't working (if the regular plan is working, just be patient, it will work out!). i'd recommend adding low glycemic veggies before dropping C below P.

ketosis is a risk if you eat fewer carbs than protein over an extended period of time. i would think that cortisol is also produced to turn your muscles into glucose. this is probably low risk given you are eating some carbs, but you ought to consider it, nonetheless.

good luck.

Jeffrye and Jill,

Jeffrey's caclulations are in error. Three blocks P and 2 blocks C is approx. 21 g P and 18 g C, or a P/C of a little over 1 (21 divided by 18 equals 1.16). 3P and 2 C specifically represents the adjustment recommended by Barry for a carb sensitive women to reach the Zone . It is fine, and would not put one at risk for ketosis. I happen to eat this balance myself , and I have been advised by BArry personally for about 6 yrs now. My AA/EPA is excellent and my fasting insulin is a 5. Refer to this: http://drsears.com/hormonalchart.page
