Hi,

I have just read the Anti Inflamation Zone and have a few questions. BTW - it is a great book, but I do think the points system only adds to the confusion and doesn't make the Zone easier as was intended.

I understand that a block of carbs is 9g, and that males need 4 blocks, females 3 etc.

What I don't understand is why there is so many variations to working out the carbs for a meal. Eg. Eyeball method, Block method and now the new points method - all methods can end up with quite different serving sizes of the same food depending on the method used.

With the eyeball method it would be very hard to pile 3 blocks or 27g carbs on a plate from fruit & veges. So you would probably end up eating alot less than 3 blocks of carbs per meal. Probably more like 2 blocks.

With the blocks and points system, for example, 3 blocks of bread is 1.5 slices whereas the equivalent points serving size is one slice. So with the points system you may really be eating only 2 blocks.

So, my questions is, how important is it to make sure you get enough carbs per meal? If your protein and fat is spot on, and you are eating favourable carbs, do carbs need to be precise? Can you just aim to eat 3 blocks of carbs or less, and not worry too much if it's 1, 2 or 3 blocks??

I wonder if it is worth the effort to worry about ensuring my carbs total 3 blocks when the eyeball & points method might only work out to be 2 blocks.

It doesn't really seem like there is a precise formula anymore as all three methods give varying amount for the same carb total per meal.

Hope my ramble makes sense to you guys:wow:

Cheers,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

By definition, Zone is a range of results on the fasting insulin blood test (5 to 10) . The protein to carb ratio to reach this range is not one specific number. The P/C range condsidered to be within the Zone is 0.6 to 1. Therefore one has a bit of leeway in the amount of C they eat. The P/C range basically encompasses anywhere from dropping a C block to adding an extra C block. Remember, not all individuals can reach the Zone using the same P/C. One needs to adjust C to their specific needs in order to gain satiety (lack of hunger). Whichever method you choose, your aim would be to get to know the actual amount of C you require for satiety, within the Zone guidelines. Yes, some methods will be more precise than others. I mostly use the block method and eyeball it when I'm out. After more that 10 yrs of using the block method, many times, even at home, it amounts to the eyeball method because I'm so familiar with the portion sizes I need.

Thanks Susan.

That makes alot of sense.

I've got the hormonal carberator chart and will see monitor based on that and add or drop a carb as necessary. Does the fat stay the same?

I ask becasue I see so many posts about maintenance on the zone as being a dropped carb and added fat blocks.

I have never seen any information on maintenance in the Zone books, or info where Dr Sears talks about this.

Where could I find info about this?

Thanks again Susan.

Cheers,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

Fat can also be slightly increased a coupel blocks , or a few, to help acheive satiety without being detrimental to the loss fo excess stored body fat. But take care to to use too much fat or you risk going out orthe Zone because of too many calories.

The drop carb and add fat adjustment is not for maintenance. It is a way to gain satiety if you're a C sensitive individual.

There is no "maintenance " level of the Zone. That said, if your body fat % should dip below the lowest ideal %, you would add extra mounsaturated fat to meals until you gain back to ideal body fat%.
