No, it's not the same. 1/3 cooked steel cut oats equals 1 C block. One cup dry steel cut oats cooked with 4 cups water will yield about 12 carb blocks.

just to clarify because I made the day 5 breakfast this morning...

the recipe asks for 2/3 cups of slow-cooking steel cut oats...

1. do they mean for me to measure out and cook 2/3 of uncooked oats?

or

2. do they mean for me to consume 2/3 cup of COOKED oatmeal?

I'm guessing it's the cook with 2/3 c of uncooked oats and consume the cooked product.

thank you very much for your help.

Hi Erika,

The day 5 breakfast in the Women's Planner would be balanced if you measured out 2/3 cup of cooked steel cut oats (secnario # 2 in your post). Also note that it will not be a Zone favorabel meal if you were to use rolled oats (the flattened oats you're probably more used to seeing).

2/3 cup of dry steel cut oats would contain around 8 blocks, enough to make 4 of the breakfasts shown for day 5.

Thank you all for the replies. I look back at my question now and I wasn't making any sense. I have been eating the 1/3 cup cooked steel cut oatmeal oats :)

I am back in "the zone" and loving every bit of it! I did the zone about 6 years ago and lost about 25lbs., went down 3 dress sizes and felt amazing! I went to college, didn't follow the zone and gained everything back and more. Now I am back in "the zone" and staying there.

I'm having trouble finding steel-cut slow-cooking oats. The women's 5 day meal planner says not to buy McCann's, but that's the only kind I've found that takes at least 30 minutes?

How many dried oats would it take to equal 2/3 cup cooked oats?

Hi Dana,

McCann's is fine if you buy the variety steel cut oats that takes 30 min to cook. The planner is trying to let you know not to use the quicker cooking type.

1/2 ounce of dry steel cut oats would be 1 block. Refer to the Food Block List (click the EATING tab, then QUICK START GUIDE).

I have just found Quaker steel cut oats in the cereal isle at my local grocery store. I bet if people asked for it, their local grocery store would carry it. Most larger chain grocery stores have a healthfood section now. Just a thought. I used the overnight method of cooking and they came out great. I froze it into 1/3 cup sections. When I choose to have it once in a great while, it will be ready!

Hi Linda,

Yes I found them at the grocery store also. I've been getting them at the health food store and they are relatively inexpensive, but when I saw them in the grocery, I picked up a can.

I am notorious for checking expiration dates. Always have been, but for some reason, it didn't even occur for me to check. When I got home and was putting them away in the cabinet, I had to raise the canister above my head and there I saw it!
The bottom of the can was stamped: Best used by October of 2007!

Of course I had no intention of consuming them and took them back to the store. They refunded the money, but it made me think of the fact of how very few people (around here anyway) purchase steel cut oats. Otherwise, they wouldn't be sitting on the shelf nearly a year later!

So for now at least, I will be sticking to the health food store. And if I do decide to pick up another canister at the market, rest assured, I know where to check the expiration date! Just a heads up in case you all weren't aware. :)

I can find a McCann's "quick" steel cut oats at my grocery store-- they still cook, but in about 5-10 min, instead of 30. If you don't have time for the 30min type, I'm sure this is probably not ideal, but lots better than the Quaker instant ones you just add hot water to. Ask your grocer to order some for you (they'll do that if you want something they dont have)

I have been buying them from iherb.com thanks to a tip I believe I originally saw here, the Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats. They're very inexpensive, even with shipping!
