Hi everybody-
I've just begun an intense weightlifting program, and i've been considering taking creatine monohydrate. It is made by nature's best, and is very pure. I was wondering if anybody knows if it is safe to take. It is recommended for the first five days to take 20 grams a day (a loading phase) and 5 grams a day for the rest of the cycle. Then every three months loading phases are recommended.

I have taken it many times in the past and it seems to work. But you generally hold onto a bit more water weight while you are on it. Ask around for the best kinds. Don't ask the guy at GNC, they lie to you.

Other than that I have never heard of ill effects.

AFTER A RECENT VISIT WITH MY DOCTOR, MY LIVER ENZYMES WERE HIGH. MY DOCOTR SAID THAT THE CREATINE COULD HAVE ILL EFFECTS ON YOUR LIVER AND SUGGESTED I NOT TAKE IT ANYMORE. MAYBE ASK YOUR DOCTOR.

Most of the studies on creatine are very positive. As Arthur said in some people they do cause water retention so if you do take it expect to put on a few pounds pretty quickly - I know this happened to me every time I used it. Just remember if you aren't eating right, getting enough sleep, and working out regularly and with the proper intensity all of the supplements in the world won't do you any good.

hi all,

i took creatine ethyl ester (cee) and it definitely works to give you more juice when lifting. i recommend the ethyl ester version because you get to take pills and the water retention is much less an issue. i took a half dose and i could definitely feel the effects.

having said that, i got plantar fasciitis for the first time (playing basketball) in my life the day after i cycled off cee for the first time. i'm not sure if it was related or not, but i don't have 2.5 months to avoid cardio so i don't want to test it.

i will say this, though... i drank the mother load of water while zoning and on creatine. it was unreal how much water i was downing.

right now i'm having great success just zoning, working out and resting, so it is all good for now. if i plateau and i'm not playing basketball, i will consider supplementing with cee again.

Alex,
Creatine works by pumping up the muscle with water and the effect goes away when you stop taking it. There is some evidence that taking creatine may shut down the body's natural production so it's not a good idea. There are other truly natural products that can be taken post workout to enhance the anabolic state and build more muscle. Creatine is controversial but as someone with a background in fitness, I wouldn't recommend it. I found a posting from someone who works at GNC and sells it but had severe kidney damage from using it, check it out: http://www.nutritionalsupplements.com/workgnc.html
Hope this helps!

I just posted this on another thread, but this report is so good that it seemed right to post it here as well.

Here is a report by Will Brink on Creatine. He's one of the most well regarded researchers in the body building industry.

Check it out here.

It's worth a read and educating yourself on creatine.

Thanks,

Steve
