Hello Sue, I'm Martha of Belgium. Do you remember ? Still there with the Zone. I have a question. I will run a belgian marathon on Sunday, during my workouts I eat 13 blocks a day, but since today, I'am in a resting week. So no workout today and a little run tomorrow, wednesday and thirsday. Have I to drop one block ? I also asked to Dr Sears If I can eat zone pasta at 6.00 am the day before the marathon. It will start at 9.30 am. What do you think of it ? My zone diet for the week is to eat only proteins with veggies until wednesday evening and then since thirsday replacing some veggies with lentils, or oats or some fruit. I try combining to replenish glycogen before the marathon. What do you think of that ? Hope you understand me, Thank you very much Martha |

Hi Martha,
I'd stay at 13 blocks all this week. I'd recommend eating one of your regular Zone balanced breakfasts the morning of the marathon, not switching to a Zone pasta breakfast (unless you've tried that during training). If you've tried a breakfast of Zone Pasta prior to a long training run and it's worked fine, then have the Zone Pasta breakfast if you prefer.
Good luck on Sunday!

Thank you Sue, I don't tested the pasta for the breakfast, only for evening meal. So, I will eat like Dr Sears'advices : 8 eggwhites omelett + 4 blocks of slow cooking oats with olive oil (I have some from Italy the village where my father came from, it is organic and very taste full), + 1/2 dr sears zone bar 45' before the start and 1/2 every 11 km. Yesterday, no workout, and I ate 12 blocks ! Today, I will eat 13 blocks. I will give you feedback. Best Regards, Martha :) |

Hi, Ok I will tell you the result. My best chrono was 3 years ago in Italy Firenze - 3th in 45+ women category with 3 hour 21 minutes. In Holland with 3 hour 22 minutes and last year, I was tired and go on with 3 hou 35 minutes. Hope it will be good this year although the weather will be sunny and hot on marathon day !:( Martha |

You're welcome Martha! Those are very good times! Congrats! I think that's a very good decision to stick with the egg white, oatmeal and olive oil breakfast that you already know works for you. I'm not sure that you'd need to eat that much during the race, but you know best what works for you. As long as you've been in the Zone and eat that Zone breakfast, you'll be tapping into your stored fat so you'll have plenty of fuel. As you know, most important will be to stay hydrated during the race (water only!), especially with the hot sunny weather. Lets hope the weather man's wrong, and a few clouds roll in. Good luck on Sunday! Keep in touch! |

Thank you Sue, Do you think I eat too much during the race ? and If I eat 1/4 Zone bars (the Dr Sears zone bars I have ordered - the shipping costs was expensive !)? Here is a reply received by Dr Sears support : Hi Martha, Consuming 60g of pasta 31/2 hours before your race seems reasonable. Actually, Dr. Sears suggests trying a 3-4 block breakfast (or pasta meal) with added monounsaturated fat, i.e. olive oil (2-3 extra blocks). 2 hours before the race. 30 minutes before the race - Dr. Sears Zone bar w/ water. During 1st hour consume a Zone balanced drink with P/C/F. Make your own or Google Endrox RU 4 Hydration without high carb sports drinks is important Nibble on Zone bars throughout the race. Omega-3 supplementation - before'during/after. 4-8 capsules of OmegaRx. Be sure to experiment with these suggestion before you attempt these in a major event. We wish you all the best and hope you find this information helpful. Sincerely, Dr. Sears Customer Support I asked for which zone drink because I don't know Endrox Ru 4 Hydration, or making my own. So, I found an hydratation drink that contain for 1 scoop 18 gr carb. For me, I would try 1 scoop for 1/2 l of water with 2 blocks protein powder and add olive oil. what do you think of it ? David advice me drinking this during the first hour. And going on with "nibble" on zone bars. I don't understand this word. Do you can explain me ? I have read your post with your experience zoning ! You are very courageous. My mother had also brain tumor but nobody believed in Zone diet (I tried her to take fish oil, but nothing to do, they didn't believed in it - altough I try to made her zone meals with fresh salmon and broccolis, but they didn't believe ...) Thank you Sue |

You're welcome!
And thanks! I don't know if I'd say courageous. I just try to deal the best I can with what life throws at me!
How was the marathon yesterday?
Sorry that I saw this post too late to reply before Sunday. I don't know about that drink either. Btu I was talking about yoru email to my daughter, and she repeated the she found it was best for her not to eat too much during the race. I think if I had known about your drink question, and asked her, her reply would most likely be tha it would upset her stomach to drink that during the first hour of running. Both of my daughters perfer to hydrate with water only and eat very little during the actual marathon. Nibble means keep to take little bites. The people in my family who have run marathons didn't nibble on bars throughout the race and they felt ok (2 daughters and my husband; a total of 6 marathons between them). Also, thought you were talking about eating 1/2 bars, not 1/4 bars , when I posted my reply to you. Was Zone support advising you about Zone Pasta (same as Eenerzone Pasta) or regular pasta? If regular pasta, them I'm very surprised! If Zone/Enerzona Pasta, 60 gr makes sense, because 60 gr of that pasta plus added fat equals a Zone balanced 3 block meal (3P, 3C, 3F).

Hello Sue, some news. So I finished the marathon in 3h33'36''. First in my women 45+ category, with podium and price-money. I was so proud. So many thanks to Dr Sears zone diet. Finaly, I ate my egg white breakfast, and not to enerzone pasta. The weather was very hot. I drank some electrolyte drinks but it about 30th km, I prefered water. Last marathons, I did well with 1/2 zone bar every 11km but this time cause to the hot weather, I only ate 1/4 zone bars and not the last kms, it was too much. So, my experience is eating during marathon if it is about 15°Celsius is ok, but when it is sunny and warm, better is cutting of half and drink more water and surely only water. For the next races, I will try the zone pasta before to use it before marathon. Martha |

Oh Sue, I have forgotten to say that the day after the marathon I fly to Italy - Verona and Parma for 3 days, so that I didn't have the opportunity to send my results ! I bought enerzona pasta and parmigiano reggiano ! Good stuff ! Martha |

Sue, Now, I have cut off workouts ! I ran 6 times a week, last week only twice and since this week, I will run 5 times a week and about 2/3 of before marathon workout. So, I think I would eat 1 block less. Is it correct ? Thank you Sue Martha |
